Can the Dante Exum Experiment Please End

More than I would want Hill guarding a KD, Lebron, Kahwi, Carmello, or Giannis.

Does everyone remember when Cy said I was dumb for saying we should trade Burks for Williams if we could... it was just only dumb because the Lakers would never do it.

The biggest thing I've started to question about Dante and his "potential" is if he is a tall/long PG, or a tall/long guy who can play some PG. Does he have the necessary leadership intangibles that are required of the position. That is all very hard to tell with a player as young as Dante, but I don't see clear signs beneath the surface.

The thing that bothers me most about Dante is that for such a tall and long PG, he doesn't play tall and long. He's ground bound and he plays like a small PG when driving... he doesn't use his length, he uses more some newly found(possibly drilled into him recently) crafty off-foot finishes.

I disagree, he uses his length a lot. Does a good job of one handed no gather layups fully extended.

I think that's exactly what I'm describing - one handed finishes or off-foot finishes, that rely on surprising the opponent and him mistiming the contest. I feel like those are more crafty than long finishes, if that makes any sense. I don't know... maybe I'm wrong on this one.

I get what you want, I think. You want him to use his length to go over people, I just dont think he is strong enough to do that yet. He uses his length to go around and under people. Some of it might be that he doesnt have 100% confidence in his knee yet.

I think he plays long, just not very athletic. Everything is below the rim. These crafty finishes are nice, but I think he'd be better off going over and through guys. He needs to get to the line more.

The place where he doesn't use his length is the passing lanes. If he can do one thing well, it's his ability to cover ground on a closeout. He needs to use his speed and length to get into the passing lanes as well.

You don't get that fast with that speed and not be athletic,Exum needs more strength .The impressive finishes will come .Getting to the basket is the 1st step.Finishing the drives with more consistency the 2nd step ,Throwing down with the authority the 3rd step.

Crazy idea time:

Keep exum playing with the first unit (even when hill gets back) because he is playing so much better in starting. Hill would obviously end up playing the majority of the game, but lately exum has a good rhythm with the starters, why put him back on the bench where he'll most likely regress to how poorly he was playing previously? His continuous starts as well will build up hid confidence

Thoughts?

replace crazy idea with ludicrous idea

George Hill starting = winning end of story

If Burks is back by turn of the year and Favors is playing as well ......Exum could be playing alongside Burks,Ingles,Lyles,Diaw...this could be a pretty good unit

Yeah, maybe the lack of vertical athleticism off one foot is another culprit in what I was talking about. The easiest way to see what I'm talking about is with his floaters - he doesn't do them jumping up on balance, but rather flings them while he's on the ground in the lane. It's a really awkward floater IMO, he does that a lot with his rim finishes too... doesn't jump up to try to get over a contest(which he should be great at with his length), but rather lays them up while running(i.e. he's ground bound on a lot of them).

I love how Exum is attacking the basket more and more. He is able to get by a lot of people. If he can get a little stronger, and finish at the rim look out.
That first step is delicious.

he's got to play defense and make shots. Cant play him if the opponent's PG doesn't have to guard him at the 3point line. that's not good. He's gotta put the shot down and he's got to defend.

he's been doing much better. Still needs to improve.

Agreed. It's a process. His rookie year he wasn't even going to the rim. Now he's getting there and learning how to finish.

Who wants to bet we could get Wall an Gortat for Favors Exum Burks an a ton of draft picks? They need to blow that team up.

Wall Hill would be so dope.

Wall, Hill, Macke
Hill, hood
Hayward, Hood, JJ, ingles
Lyles, Gortat, Fat ***
