The wranglers are supposed to have the 3.0l diesel next year too, that would be so awesome. It is the same engine in the ram 1500 eco diesel, which got great reviews.

I'd say it's the popularities of the diesel sedans more so than the standards-- I'm quite certain a lot of countries in Europe are more strict with emissions than the USA would be. I could really be wrong though.

Probably the same as the States-- I rarely see them. Mostly just VWs sprinkled here there-- the RARE Mercedes BlueTec. That's about it.
Quite growingly common in trucks though, as well as some SUVs. Economy is booming here though, so ppl got money to blow and they dgaf about diesel vs gas that much

I know for a fact a rather large diesel company no longer makes diesels for the U.S. because they refused to change for the emission standards.

For some people, it's hard to justify a damn near $10k uptick just because of a diesel. Sure the engine might last forever, but the car around it probably won't, and you're not gonna save that $10k at the pump. They have a killer resale value though.

Since June of 2007, the states have had the strictest diesel emissions standards in the world. Many automakers flatly refuse to sell diesel engines in north america for that reason. The engineering is possible, it just costs a lot.
The case of Mazda skyactiv diesel is the biggest example. They have been telling consumers they would have a Mazda 6 diesel for two years, but they can't make it get the small particulate emissions low enough to match California's regulations. (All new US autos must match California's regs to be sold here)

They are getting cheaper. I think for the jeep it adds almost $6k, the vw is $4500 more, and the Chevy cruze diesel is a $2500 addition. All of that money is a lot of gasoline though, especially when the diesel is more expensive than unleaded.

Our diesel regimatolns are absolutely horrid. Good example of govt doing too much.
Thinking about buying one. Still looking at Skoda's though. They pack a ton of tech into a comfy and affordable package. Like this one:

Legit is my 2001 Subaru Outback. Bought this bish new in 2001. Travelled all over in it, still have it, 210,000 miles and counting, no problems.
The pic doesnt work for me for some reason, but man, I love subarus. My wife and I have had a subaru for like the whole time we have been married, save this last few months. We had a 99 that had over 300k on it, and was still running strong, but my dumb niece totaled it when I let her drive it once. As long as you are on top of changing the timing belt, those cars will last for ever.

I've got some semi-serious repairs to do right now. Axil work, some light rebuilding on the top end. It's good to hear that you went 300K.... Gives me hope that these repairs are worth it.

Yeah, I think mine was at like 330k, and I was going to put about $2200 into a bunch of repairs. I questioned it, because at that point, the suspension is really shot, and would need to be replaced. It would just bounce forever when we hit a bump, and corners became more dangerous at high speeds.
The other thing is the way those engines are built, the head gaskets just get separated after so much time with the weight of the heads on them. I loved that car though.

did you have the 4cyl or the 6cyl? I have the 6 and I'm wondering if that impacts the engine design you're talking about. I should do gasket work at this point, but, **** man, I fear that. I'd have to have all of that done for me for $$$$. Tough to know what's worth it.
