Chicago to Atlanta driving......

I'm going to the BYU games @ Notre Dame and @ Georgia Tech with a few friends next week. Flying to Chicago, renting a car, and just plan on exploring a lot. We don't have any set itinerary, we just want to explore. 10 days to do so.

My question is simply, what cities are worth driving out of the way to? While in Chicago, we could pop up to Milwaukee, easily go to Detroit/Cleveland/Toronto as well if we want. Any of those worth it? We're going to see some solid grit in Gary, Indiana and SouthSide Chicago anyway so I don't know. We love seeing rough neck places though.

Mapquest says I should go Chicago to Atlanta through Indianapolis/Louisville/Nashville so we'll stop at all those places and look around, maybe stay overnight if they are appealing. But we could also go to Cincinatti, St Louis, and Memphis too with little effort on the route. Any of those worth it?

And just being in the Atlanta area, Savanahh/Charleston, SC/Congaree National Park look good. If I had to guess, that's where I think we'll end up spending most of our time. I've always had a thing for that area even though I've never been there.

If you can't tell, we're convinced that Chicago and Atlanta themselves aren't going to be able to hold our attention for that long.

Detroit = No
Cleveland = No (but if you do go, go to the "Flats."
Milwaukee is cool, but I don't know about for Mormons.
Toronto not bad at all .. you been to Niagara Falls (worth it).
While going through Louisville, you could pop over to Lexington for Big Blue Madness (UK's first practice that packs the house) on the 13th.
Atlanta underground is cool.
Nashville is a way cool city.
Savannah and Charleston are both very cool little towns .. and with Charlestons pirate hauntings, it's a can't miss. :)

Not sure about the Indy/Nashville route but there are some good places to stop and eat on the Memphis/St Louis route. Memphis is full of kick *** BBQ joints. Plus there is Graceland and Beal street. In Sikeston, MO (between St Louis and Memphis) you could hit up Lamberts. That is some damn good food right there. Go hungry...

Cinci = not worth it (unless you like amusement parks - King's Island)
St. Louis = Nope.
Memphis = get your car jacked, but they have good bbq.

A place you don't have on your list that's cool and close is Port Clinton, OH .. go to Put-in-Bay.

Chicago is awesome. Don't know why you'd spend less time there to try and see a place like Cincinatti.

In Sikeston, MO...? Yeah those towns of 15k population are brutal. You stop and bam you're hobbled, all the women are banged, so is the dog, son turns gay, your luggage goes missing and someone siphons out your gas.

Did you know if you finish your entree they bring you another one?

Free Meal on your birthday too.

Seattle = cool
NYC = the best, hands down
Atlanta not bad
Miami isn't my thing
San Fran
San Diego
Austin

Don't worry, Re: Chicago. I'm going there on Wed and the ND game in South Bend is on Saturday so we're forced to stay in that general area for 3 or 4 days. Though any Chicago time spent elsewhere would fall victim to Detroit. I'm honestly pretty curious about Detroit though so I'm tempted.
