I'm going to the BYU games @ Notre Dame and @ Georgia Tech with a few friends next week. Flying to Chicago, renting a car, and just plan on exploring a lot. We don't have any set itinerary, we just want to explore. 10 days to do so.
My question is simply, what cities are worth driving out of the way to? While in Chicago, we could pop up to Milwaukee, easily go to Detroit/Cleveland/Toronto as well if we want. Any of those worth it? We're going to see some solid grit in Gary, Indiana and SouthSide Chicago anyway so I don't know. We love seeing rough neck places though.
Mapquest says I should go Chicago to Atlanta through Indianapolis/Louisville/Nashville so we'll stop at all those places and look around, maybe stay overnight if they are appealing. But we could also go to Cincinatti, St Louis, and Memphis too with little effort on the route. Any of those worth it?
And just being in the Atlanta area, Savanahh/Charleston, SC/Congaree National Park look good. If I had to guess, that's where I think we'll end up spending most of our time. I've always had a thing for that area even though I've never been there.
If you can't tell, we're convinced that Chicago and Atlanta themselves aren't going to be able to hold our attention for that long.
