Karl Marx didn't like coffee Jim, did he?
Coffee is a mild stimulant.
My mom was a big coffee drinker and she and I were the early risers in our house and so we would hang out and chat while she was drinking her coffee. At 13 I started asking her if I could have some coffee. At first she just told me no, but I kept asking and she finally told me that if I wanted to drink coffee I could as long as I didn't put any milk or sugar in it. I think she thought that would stop me from drinking coffee. Anyway, been drinking coffee since I was 13. Black, no sugar.
It's an addiction, but as I said above, it's socially acceptable. Can you imagine the consequences if you casually mentioned that you're "pretty useless until I have my morning line" in a work setting?
Methamphetamine is also a mild stimulant if you take small enough of an amount. They don't make you piss in a cup to see if you've had coffee at any job I've heard of, though.
But it's not about that. The point, which you seemed to ignore, is that the society treats coffee differently than other stimulants and other drugs. You say yourself, you wake up and have two strong cups of coffee every morning. How is that not an addiction?

The hate is strong with this one.
Coffee is a mild stimulant. And yeah, the addiction part is real. But it's not like I have to "do" coffee all day. I wake up, have two cups of strong coffee and then don't touch caffeine for the rest of the day. I want to smack people drinking coffee within 6 hours of when they're going to go to bed. That's straight dumb.
But the good news, as broncster posted, is that coffee is quite good for you. And the way I drink it, black, no sugar, a cup has 2 calories.
Excuse me while I go pour my second cup of coffee...
JimLes is addicted to the preach. Juicy juicy preaches.
I used to have a stash of Adderall that I used in small quantities when needed. It was really nice. I got it as a prescription when I was going to school, and since doctors will just give you as much as you want, I ended up graduating with like 5 years worth of pills (if used occasionally). By the end, I totally expected them to expire and lose potency. But it never happened.
Last time I got fract'd for saying that drugs are wonderful when used correctly. So I won't say that again. No, never.
I bet Jimles is foaming reading ^^.
In many places in Europe it is totally normal to have coffee after dinner. Waiters ask you. I can drink coffee at 9:00 PM, otherwise totally sober and go to sleep within a couple of hours no problem. I do that about once a month just because I want a hot cup of earth.

Some people like to do lines of caffeine, it is much more dangerous though than taking it orally. Seems silly to me, but enough things are banned that people do silly things.. "Coffee drunkenness," he said, "is a commoner failing than the whiskey habit... This country is full of tea and coffee drunkards. The most common drug in this country is caffeine.
I said that it IS an addiction.
Also, the negative consequences of drinking a few cups of coffee don't exist, that's why it's socially acceptable. Sorry that bugs you so much. I don't understand why it does, but it obviously it does. I wish you didn't have to live in a world where people drink coffee with the full acceptance of society. It's a ****ed up world.
No, I wish I lived in a world where enjoying whatever stimulants is up to you and not interfered with by the government, your employer, or anyone else. Instead of having certain stimulants being socially accepted(it's not just coffee, it's also nicotine and other ones), while other stimulants or opioids or psychoactives are not just prohibited, but enormous amounts of money, effort, time, and live are wasted on fighting them.
So, no, I'm not some prude freaking out about drugs. Quite the opposite. What bothers me is that vast majority of Americans(as well as Canadians) are very much opposed to legalization of all recreational drugs. Yet two thirds of Americans report drinking at least a cup of coffee a day. Among those two thirds, the average rate of consumption is 2.7 cups. It's easy to be a hypocrite when your drug of choice is legal.
And don't give me that bull **** about how some drugs are more dangerous to you than others because it has nothing to do with why some stimulants are legal while others are not.
Drug laws are silly. Most of them started because of racist hysteria and were/are used to keep certain groups down. It is crazy the medical Marijuana isnt legal. I personally am a fan of decriminalizing not necessarily legalizing drugs. It would most likely put an end to or greatly reduce certain drugs like heroin and meth that are particularly nasty. Heroin used to be used in cough syrup you could buy over the counter in this country.
I agree generally. One problem is addicts have no good option. It's hard to get help when you are breaking the law by using/buying heroine. People are going to get it. Most heroine addicts are former prescription opioid addicts who can't afford those and turn to the cheaper easier to get heroine. Its a complicated issue but I definitely side on not wasting money fighting drug use by consenting adults.Banning the production and sale of heroin creates fewer heroin addicts. Banning the production and sale of heroin makes it more expensive and more dangerous. Which statement is more true?
When I consider the above question I tend to lean towards legalization.
