Cooper Flagg wants another year in college

This is just one throwaway quote from a massive Athletic piece taken out of context.

I got the feeling that Flagg might be a bit wary of the circus that is to follow and has also loved his time at Duke - and just in some way would like that to continue.

But in the same piece there was a quote from his mom who has banned him from getting a girlfriend at Duke, so there are no emotional bonds, because he's gonna only be there for a year... (And btw, should the Jazz capture the Flagg, it really did sound like his mom is going to be a handful.)

Are the Jazz not currently tanking correctly?

It's only going to get harder next year if the current young players improve. We might start looking like the Raptors next year
I mean, relative to Washington and New Orleans, the Jazz aren’t keeping pace. We gotta hope that Charlotte bungles their tank, otherwise 4th is the best the Jazz can hope for.

The Pelicans are going to be awful without Zion, and Zion won't play many games.

But the Wiz won 3 out of 7 before the break and did it with rookies and sophomores only pretty much. And all the kids seem to be getting a bit better. So they in fact might win a few more games the rest of the way, and doubt they would bench any of the rookies for 10-day players.

The Hornets are 6-5 this year with LaMelo, 0-9 without him. He had an ankle injury so let's see how much they play him.

As long as we're top 3 we'd have equal shot at Flagg:

Team > Odds for No. 1 Pick

  • Team 1: 14.0%
  • Team 2: 14.0%
  • Team 3: 14.0%
  • Team 4: 12.5%
  • Team 5: 10.5%
  • Team 6: 9.0%
  • Team 7: 7.5%
  • Team 8: 6.0%
  • Team 9: 4.5%
  • Team 10: 3.0%
  • Team 11: 2.0%
  • Team 12: 1.5%
  • Team 13: 1.0%
  • Team 14: 0.5%

The main issue is how far you can get pushed down by other teams moving up. Odds are even for 'top' 3 teams for picking first though.
If you take it a step further and group them together, then for each of the top 3 positions, a team outside of the top 3 has a better chance of getting that spot than any of the top 3 teams do (58% vs 42% respectively), which is why pretty much every year we see a team outside of the top 3 leapfrog at least one top 3 team into a top 3 pick. So we really don't have a great chance at getting the top spot, all things considered. And we stand a reasonably good chance of being bumped out of the top 3 altogether.

I've

I've been a Jazz fan since they moved to Utah. In all that time they have never moved up to a better pick and have almost always been moved down because other teams have drawn out lucky numbers. They haven't even won a coin toss when it has come down to draft positioning. What makes you think our luck will change now?

The law of averages. Simple

Mom is trying to avoid the Filipowski experience...

How come the Hornets have only played 20 games? (TIC)

I’ll let you be the judge of that. We can kiss Flagg goodbye by the way.
lmao. The jazz winning isnt really affecting the Flagg odds that much. We are talking like a 2-3% difference. If your only goal is Flagg, getting 1/2/3/4 isnt that big a deal.

1.5% to be precise, for Flagg. But this is the right way to think of the Flagg stakes.

If someone thinks the difference between picks 5-7 this year is so important that it will forever change the Jazz's trajectory (which I personally don't think is likely), then I guess you can worry about whether we end up 2nd, 3rd, or 4th best odds.
