Cougars 2011-12 Football Discussion

Ah, I've never done a tease. I didn't realize they give you 10. So they give 10 points extra on every game or just a cumulative 10 points spread over the 3? I think it's definitely a better bet at 17.5. If BYU scores even that much, they'll probably rip down the goal posts.

Agreed. I seriously wonder whether BYU will score 17 pts, let alone win by 17. (Prove me wrong, Cougars!)

That was pretty impressive by Nelson. He's gotta be the starter going forward, right? How can they start Heaps now after what Nelson just did?

That same question has gone through my mind about 25 times tonight.

I would have to almost think it was Bronco that said it... Heaps is Doman's boy but maybe Bronco at half said he has one series and if you don't make the switch I will. Either that or he said I will fire your *** like I did Robert last year if we lose this game so Doman had to make the switch out of desperation.

I agree. They can't go back to Heaps now. Not unless/until Nelson starts mangling things as bad as Heaps has been doing.

That was great stuff by Nelson, his improvisation was off the charts tonight. I did my fair share of bashing him last year because I wanted to see Heaps throw it around like the BYU of old, but that dream never panned out. I definitely am interested to see what he can do when there isn't Heaps involved in the equation. I hope the coaches make it clear that he is the guy now and he won't get pulled unless he goes on a string of 5 + lackluster games like Heaps. He earned his shot going forward tonight.

It has to be so sweet for him. He transfers from Utah State, Utah State fans whine for years, and now he sticks it to them.

Actually, I don't really care about Nelson. He transferred to get into a better pre-med program, good for him. I was thinking about the same question others have already posted. So what happens to Heaps now? Does he quit the team and transfer? He seems like such a head case that I can't imagine anyone wanting to pick him up. He has a good arm, but is way to one dimensional. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Two points came to me after seeing the results of this game...

#1 Who decided to bench Hypes I mean Heaps?

#2 How many more games does Anderson have to dump away before the Honeymoon phase is over?

I know how Aggie fans are in love with Gary Anderson. Yet, I keep seeing some pretty crappy records. Is he better than his dump predecessor? Absolutely! That guysucked. But, how do you find ways to lose so many games while having sooooooooooooooooo much opportunity? How many other coaches could have found a way to lose a 10 point lead in 3 minutes, like Auburn? How do you lose to CSU? And how, how, how, do you let BYU come back and beat you with Nelson at QB?

Maybe it's the overly conservative offense?

Maybe it's not giving the damn ball to the best RB in the state?

Or maybe Anderson just isn't clutch?

But eventually moral victories are going to wear down their fanbase. Eventually Anderson better deliver. For as much "improvement" as I hear, I still see a team struggling to even qualify for a bowl game despite having some incredible talent.

Oh and another thought...

If I'm heaps and I'm benched now, I'm pretty upset. Just look at the upcoming schedule. Nelson should look great.... Had Heaps not sucked so bad to get benched, guaranteed ol jakie pooh would have looked amazing these next few games. Then, he could have fooled us all into thinking that he had finally "arrived."

Just watch folks, Nelson and Doman are going to should from the rooftops how they've "figured out" the offense and that fans were just "impatient."

In reality, they're just going to beat up on lesser competition.

Like UCF and Utah State (that they just barely, barely scraped by AT HOME) are BCS calibre in contrast?

Yeah, all Utah State fans certainly don't feel that way, but your message boards definitely have given off that vibe for a few years now. I mean, c'mon, you guys were the impetus for the so called "Riley Nelson" rule that the NCAA passed.

As for Heaps, I don't know. Best case scenario for BYU would be that Riley Nelson continues to play well this year, goes into next year as the starter, and Heaps takes a redshirt year to foment some kind of passion and learn to put some touch on the ball. He's too mechanical for anything other than looking like an All-American in practice right now. Although, certainly the guys calling the plays haven't used him properly. Of course, like you mentioned, there is a high probability that he is a primmadonna and won't want to take the lesson and learn from it and come back and compete for the starting job in '13.

Ben Olson was the #1 rated QB a few years back coming out of high school, transferred to UCLA from BYU after the coaches played games with him, and bombed out so I wouldn't even flinch if he left other than possibly be concerned about future depth. BYU's got some nice QB talent in the pipeline, I'm not sure he is a lock to come back in '13 and win the starting job if that's how this situation ultimately plays out.

After two weeks of sitting on the sidelines, reading, pondering, and praying, I just want to say this: As a Democrat and a BYU fan, I HATE The Thriller and would appreciate it if the world would kindly consider the idea that's he's really not one of us, and to not throw him in with our "ilk".

Gracias,

Trout.

As much as I don't want to see BYU play those scrub teams from a fan's perspective on a regular basis, in reality this is the perfect schedule for this current team and situation. They've got 3 games they should win handily coming up and then TCU. You'll be able to see where BYU's at after that TCU game.

Kind of like last year. Nelson gets hurt and misses the cupcake part of the schedule, where Heaps looks good. This year, with tough opponents, Heaps really struggles.

Wait, what happened to being independent?
