I will be seriously disappointed if Nelson doesn't get the start. The offense (read: Heaps) has been ticking me off the entire season, and then finally for one glorious quarter it came alive. Fan the flames, keep that fire alive!
 
I'm really suprised at how quickly Cougar fans are ready to jump ship on Jake Heaps. Don't get me wrong, Nelson obviously provided a spark and going forward his ability to make plays with his legs and improvise are certainly things Heaps doesn't bring to the table. With that being said, you still need a decent passing offense to compete and quite frankly I don't think Nelson is going to give you that over the course of an entire season. His 2 biggest completions against Utah State were a high hanging hail mary that that the defense played horribly and the game winning TD pass. A pass that was so off target, an Aggie player actually had a better track on the ball, popped it up in the air and it just happened to land in the hands of a Cougar.

Nelson will almost certainly help you beat the San Jose State's and Idaho's on your schedule but that's probably about it. Who knows if Heaps will ever "get it", but is Riely Nelson really going to be the guy for the next year and a half?

I don't think anyone really believes in Nelson.

However, when you've heard so many reports that Heaps is the "Boozer" of this team, you cannot help but wonder if a good benching would do him some good. Some humility might shock him back into doing the basics, work hard, listen to your coaches, and become a better leader instead of thinking you're god's gift to BYU.
 
Nelson only had success against the Aggies because they had no game plan to defend him. Once a team has a week to prepare for Nelson, people will be calling for him to be benched and Heaps brought back in.

Nelson looked fine to me tonight. The offense in the 1st half showed more life than I've ever seen under Heaps.

Of course, San Jose St. isn't exactly a great team...

His long balls were much better than Heaps'. I think the fact that sometimes he's probably stretching his arm's limit on those throws actually helps him. He's either going to throw it a little short or on target, not into the stands so the ball is always going to be in play to an extent. Doman, of course, got scared again once Riley made a few mistakes and went totally conservative for awhile. He needs to get over that mental block, just be happy your guy is trying to make plays; we did run the ball well though - which was nice.

One huge factor you didn't mention in all of this is the risk of turnover (interception). If you tend to under-throw/keep the ball in play and don't throw ahead or above a little, you're asking to get picked off. Of course, in which case, it's better to have the ball in the stands, or reign in the play-calling a little bit.

But most of the time the DB is the one trailing though so his eyes aren't as aware where/when the ball is coming, so I don't think the risk is that big. But at worst at that point, it becomes a punt. I know it doesn't bode well for the stats of your QB, but I wouldn't flinch if I was calling plays and my quarterback was getting picked 50 yards from where he throws it. That's a better result than innumerable things that could happen. BYU's QBs keep getting picked on short routes or short fields. That's the bigger issue.

Now you 'signed' this contract with ESPN only for ESPN to realize that the rating or following isn't what they thought it would be and they are not putting the BYU @ Oregon State game on TV (Probably the 2nd biggest game for BYU Fans left on the schedule).

Luckily for you all you will be able to watch the rebroadcast on BYU TV...

After the Utah debacle, who cares?
 
I may have misspoke above.. Is the game being broadcast on CBS Sports? Is that a channel that everyone gets?

Also on the BYU TV, if ESPN doesn't pick a game up does BYUTV have the rights to broadcast a live game or do they have to delay it?
