Dante Exum Averages .2 Steals Per Game

We are basically the same roster as last year. I'm not buying that we can't right this ship. Quin has been patient, as he should be, but I think it's time to tinker. He can always go back and at this point what is there to lose?
The Jazz righted the ship last year by not tinkering and staying patient.

I think DL will make a trade once January 15th passes. I doubt Quin changes the lineup until that happens.

On a night when they really need a guy like Exum to step up, he goes 1-4 FGs for two points. And for the most part its simply because he's not capable of much else.

Sad thing is none of this is surprising. He had proven nothing prior to the draft and the jazz bought into the hype.

It was a pretty two points though. Showed alot of potential...

Which is a lot easier to do after losing an all-star and expectations are at or around zero.

Plus past performance does not guarantee future results - especially after the rest of the conference gets better and you're all #teamiseverything.

Let's just pretend Rubio is injured. Along with Donovan(assuming he misses this game).

Sure, but I don't think anyone on Utah has job security issues. They are going to do what worked last year, partly because the alternatives don't have a higher upside, until players become trade eligible.

I get why they signed him to that deal. 11 million isnt outrageous. It's a tradeable contract. He did about as good a job on Harden as I've ever seen in the playoffs.
And yet he got eviscerated by Raymond Felton in the playoffs.

I don't think Dante is a very good defender at all. He's very good at looking the part of a defender, which fools fans. Really this year's Memphis game was the only game i felt like his defense was impactful (and it was impactful that game).

I mean, if you trust bbref, your opinion may have some validity.

I think he's doing what coach wants. His job is to come in and guard the opposing teams "fast" guy. Disrupt their flow and be a pest. For the most part he does that with regularity. I'm fine with where he's at and the potential to be more.

But defense sucks when he is on the floor. Hi DRPM is 73rd out of 80 point guards. But hey, he is slightly above trey burke

I'm so tired of people crying about Exum. Using an obscure stat to "prove" his lack of value. Did y'all watch the last Memphis game? Exum simply stayed in front of Conley and played excellent defense.

I would like for him to have more than .2 steals in his less than 20mpg. But are we really going to judge him completely on that? Crowder has a rep as a defender, but if he only gets .2 blocks per game he sucks?

Some of y'all reach so bad to find a way to bash somebody. Our FO just spent money on Exum. Jump on board or shut up.

He is bottom tier in every advanced defensive stat that I have seen. Jazz defense when Exum is on the floor is terrible

I'm assuming his advanced defensive stats take a huge hit because of his steal rate.
Well yeah he has 4 steals and 3 blocks in 330 minutes. He also has 9 deflections, 5 loose balls recovered, and 1 charge drawn (last game, trending UP!). Athletic freak Georges Niang has 9 deflections and 5 loose balls recovered in 119 minutes.

In Dante's defense, I don't buy into his RDPM as much because of the few minutes he gets to play with Gobert vs Rubio who primarily plays with him. All the players outside of Thabo who are positive play with him the most, and Thabo has a very small sample size so far (although I wouldn't be surprised if it held since he is a good all round defender)

I agree with the general sentiment that he isn't an impactful defender outside of 1 v 1 positional defense and contesting shots though. His offball defense is non-existent outside of staying home on his man, if he does try to make a play he usually fouls. He's terrible at reading passing lanes when he should be a lot better with his length and speed. He rarely causes any turnovers defensively as well, and he's often late to react to anything that isn't fighting through a screen on a PnR (e.g. switches)

Here's why I don't think his DRPM is indicitive of Exum's defense. Players on average are shooting 3.3% worse with Exum defending them than league average, and they shoot 13% worse (!) on 3pt attempts when guarded by Exum. They shoot 4.3% higher on Exum at the midrange area though, and I'm not sure how much of that is Exum just not being in the right spot to contest vs how much of that is schematic with the Jazz' defense allowing the midrange shot.

If he ever figures out how to read passing lanes better or being quicker on help defense then I think there's no argument that he would be an elite defender at his position. Lonzo Ball is actually pretty good at it, Exum should go watch some of his film since they're somewhat comparable players but Lonzo clearly has a much higher IQ of the game.

Rubio comparison for those who are interested. I find it hard to believe that Rubio is nearly a net neutral defensive player while Exum is a gaping negative for the team, which is why I think Rubio playing most his minutes with Gobert is skewing his RDPM.

Maybe that's where he belongs? In recreational league with no structure, no coaching, no defense and where winning does not matter.
The hate is strong on this one. We’re paying him for three years, should go more to see oh he is as bad as you say. We are after all currently a lottery team.
