Dante Exum: The Future is Not Now

I think we can all agree the Dante hasn't been "handed" anything in his time with the Jazz. Kid isn't even "handed" the opportunity to play through a mistake.

Yes he was. He was clearly handed the starting job his rookie year solely based on the fact that Trey Burke was horrendous.

So, nothing to do with the fact we won 70% of games he started (read this in previous comments) or was part of an alltime defensive post allstar run?

If you beat someone out of a job its hardly being handed to you.

Post-All Star means nothing. Half the teams start tanking and the other half are mostly set in their playoff positions. Most of our improvement was based on not playing Burke and Gobert getting more minutes. It had little to do with Exum.

Lame excuses.... Exum led in plus/minus and played great defense and he's been judged on that defense this year as his barometer.Funny you make yourself look like you didn't watch the 2nd half games Exum's rookie year when they played outstanding defense and you're not much of a fan when you try to diminish how good they played.

I havent given up on Exum, but if I'm the Jazz I'm operating on the assumption that Exum should be the 3rd string PG going into the season. If I can't re-sign Hill I'm looking for a starting PG, and if I can re-sign Hill I'm looking for an upgrade to backup PG.

3rd string pg?
Dante should be at least the 2nd point guard in the team. Possibly even the starter.

The thing I hate about this is you tanked three years for Exum. If he's your third stringer next year...

Then damn, Lindsey sucks at the draft.

Passed over Giannis and Rudy for Burke.
Exum over Smart.
Lyles over Booker.
Then traded #12 for Hill instead of Teague.

Dude can't draft.

3 years ago after Rudy's rookie season. He looked like a total non NBA player. He couldn't handle the ball, he barely rebounded, he was no where near the defensive impact he is today and probably not as good as Exum is right now. When Rudy got the ball very rarely did anything good happen. He was the same age that year as Exum is now. Rudy never showed near the promise Exum has this season, he never took over a game on either end of the floor. He looked like an awkward stiff that had a hard time catching the ball and moving. Nobody after that season thought he'd be anything close to what he is now, hell almost all of us probably thought he didn't have a shot at supplanting Kanter as the starting center.
I disagree about rudy.
First time I saw him on the court at a scrimmage right after we drafted him I was blown away and knew he would be good.

I think he's saying that Rudy's rookie season he looked bad. I'm not sure I agree with that completely. He definitely showed flashes when he got a little bit of time, but Ty Corbin refused to play him much in a 100% tank year. But he definitely improved a ton before his second season. Let's hope Dante has a similar jump now that he has his first healthy off-season to work on his game as a Jazzman.
Also I think rudy did great in the d league iirc

I thought the video was a little lacking in showcasing his .295 3 point percent

Even the greatest player of all time, Michael Jordan shot the 3 pointers very poorly in his first 5 years in the nba.

1984~85 17%
1985~86. 16%
1986~87. 18%
1987~88. 13%
1988~89. 27%

My point is, don't be such a jerk.

Exum needs a lot more confidence. It will help his overall game and shooting. He has okay form, and it looks like his shot became even more mechanical this season (don't know what coach is working with him, but it was not a step in the right direction). He needs to build good form and develop muscle memory.

I still think he is going to be a good player.

Works for Klay Thompson...

His shot is definitely better form than his rookie year in my opinion. He did redo his shot and that can take time to get consistent. His release was inconsistent the first half of the season but it was much improved the second half and looked a little more fluid although still a bit rigid/mechanical. He tends to miss long or short and not side to side which is generally a good sign that he can be a good shooter.

This will be his first healthy off season so I think he will be able to improve a fair amount. I would expect next year for him to at least shoot from three what he did past the all-star this year of 34%. I really hope he can improve on that and get it closer to 40%. That would really open his game up.

Ron if he gets near 40% the world will be his oyster. I'd be pretty happy if he had a full year of 35-36 %

As long as Exum and Lyles have to shoot 3pter's or get pulled ,they won't be good 3 pt shooters.Ingles,Hayward,Hill ,JJ,and Hood get to take 3pter's when their comfortable ,they don't get pulled when they pass on wide open 3pter's .Their given the benefit of the doubt. There's no way in hell Exum takes 40% of his shots from 3 cause he wants too.75% of Exum's shots should be drives or in the paint shots at his age.Exum and Lyles didn't make it to the NBA as high draft picks because they are great perimeter shooters, so expecting their games to get a total makeover is not realistic.
