Dante Exum: The Future is Not Now

Wait, wait, wait. You are Lindsey. You have 12 and 14. You think Gobert is a top 10 player.

So, you trade up to 9, then don't draft Gobert?

Especially when you DONT have anothe first round pick?

And you HOPE you can get back into the first round and you HOPE no one else drafts him so you can get your top 10 talent later?

Lol.

We didn't have 12 and 14 for one. We had 14 and 21.

Second, you really aren't understanding the concept of what Lindsey does.

If he thinks Gobert was let's say the 7th best player but the rest of the league values him as the 25th best player. Why would you take him any earlier than 20 or so? That's just dumb and bad business.

I really like this car and I think it's worth $10,000 but the price on it is $7,000. Should you offer $10,000 for it? Hell no.

If you know you can get a player in the 20s, you don't waste a high pick to get him. You have to know the market value of each player and spend a pick (or other assets to get a pick) without over paying.

The name of the game is to assess players as accurately as possible and shop effectively with your picks. If you can get intelligence on who other teams are drafting, that helps.

The Jazz traded down to 27 to get Gobert. They were a bit lucky he was still available, but they knew he'd be in that range.

Because Corbin was getting dragged through the dirt by fans. You may have some revisionist history, but people loved this pick when it happened. When DL gave Corbin the credit, it made Corbin look better to the fans. That's all it was, the dude throwing Corbin a bone.
I can attest that many many people loved that pick and thought the team would be winning very soon.

I agree in general but you have to be careful. Its dangerous trying to guess what other war rooms look like. The Jazz took Hayward at #9 way back when and everyone called it a reach. It later came out Indiana would have taken him #10 if the Jazz didn't take him at 9. If KOC would have traded down to 14 could have easily ended up with Xavier Henry or Luke Babbitt, both who looked like good prospects at the time. Our team would be a dumpster fire if that happened (unless we got lucky and won the lottery in subsequent years).

This year the Jazz have the 24 and 30 picks, which are way to close to be playing games with market value. If they love Frank Jackson, they take him at 24 and don't play around hoping he'll be there at 30 just because DX has him at 38.

Wow! This thread is still going. I'm so excited to watch Dante this next season. My only concern is that he gets hurt again, which can happen to anybody really. Barring that, I have complete confidence that he'll have a break-out year. So glad he fell into our laps!

Yes. The future is not now with The Jazz. The future lies somewhere else with another nba team. Ask for a trade Dante and go to another team who will appreciate your ability.

DL is terrible in the lottery.

DL has had 3 picks: Burke (9), Exum (5) and Lyles (12)

One was terrible, two are TBD. Let's revisit in 5 years.

If your opinion is that DL had full control to do whatever he wanted, many (including me) would disagree with you regarding the organizational power and politics of the Jazz at that time. The first year on any job, one is often consolidating influence & increasing power and trying to gain the confidence of the ownership, who had confidence in the heritage front office leaders, including KOC.

So yes, DL is accountable for the TB pick, but to stopping there and ignoring other factors over-simplifies the analysis.

How can a gm KNOW for sure? That's a lot of projecting to rely on.[/URL]

The fact that no one KNOWS the future is true but misses the point. Smart GMs make decisions about what we BELIEVE will happen (after thoughtful analysis) -- all the time. It is a calculated risk.

Sixers had Saric on the top of their board and believed neither Chicago or NO would draft him, but Pelicans would give up assets to move up to get Payton (who the Sixers did not like). They got Saric, a future first round pick and a second. If you just take Saric at 12, you've made an amazingly stupid mistake and foregone the other assets. These assets are the "payoff" for taking the risk.

On a smaller scale, the Jazz believed Bolomboy was going to be on the board so they traded back last year and got him.

Truth

Besides a few starry-eyed naive fans, I don't think so.

I remember that when Burke was actually given the starting role he was tearing it up in comparison with what we had playing pg at the time. It didn't take the league too long to figure him out though.
