What's new

David Locke twits about Pau Gasol.

not sure who you think we're getting, but my point is that pau is better than just about anyone in next year's free agent class, except for the players we have no shot at (cp3, dwight, harden, etc...).

i don't believe the pau rumor/possibility for a second, but if it were on the table and the jazz passed it up so they could maybe possibly have an outside chance of signing emeka okafor or manu ginobili... that just makes no sense. financial flexibility is only an asset inasmuch as it gives you a chance to get top talent. telling top talent to take a hike so you can maintain financial flexibility is putting the cart before the horse.

I make a max offer to Harden.

It's a big win if we get him. A small win if we push our division rival into mega-tax territory.

There are others I'm interested in, too.

If you can get Pau for Al you do it. But there's just no way the Lakers would deal Pau without getting some forward assets back, the GS pick doesn't cut it, and you can't put any of the 4 kids into the deal.

simply put, we will be able to out bid other teams.
What about that old adage that players follow the money?
I want one young max guy next year, and I think a lot of KOC's moves suggest that he does too. If you add Pau and extend Mo and Sap, then..................

...............you have a really solid core of vets with some young studs who have mounds of potential. With those players we could compete for top 3-4 in the west for the next 5 years.

five years from now has nothing to do with Pau Gasol since he'll be pushing around a walker.

I love how the youth movement on our team has made our fan base shudder at the idea of having anyone in the vicinity of their mid 30's on our team.

I'm not shuddering because I see some "old man". Look up the stats for players over the age of 32... just look em up, braugh.

The reason the Lakers want to trade Pau is because nobody thinks he's worth the MASSIVE CONTRACT he has.

I'd only do it if the Lakers could furnish a few high-quality picks. They can't.

I dunno... Bynum extended, the GSW pick and whatever else LA was offering looks like a pretty good return out of a bad situation in Orlando.

But I'm not losing that pick unless Gasol could be rerouted for better assets (Iggy or Deng?)

We'd be giving up picks in this scenario. You're telling me you wouldn't have wanted the last 4-5 years that both KG and Duncan played. Pau isn't on their level on defense, but offensively I think he's in the same category.

I guarantee that Pau has 3 elite years left in him and 2 years at just below elite. Dude's 32.

I like the two leaps you make:

1. that Gasol would stick around for the remaining of his so-called elite years. (And that he'd do so for at a reasonable price).
2. that I'm some numbnuts that hasn't been watching Jazz ball for decades (which included the heydays of Stockton to Malone which peaked when they were older).

I live in California; I see plenty of Lakers games; Gasol is declining, plain and simple.

for weeks, people on these boards have been willing to trade al jefferson for a bag of used toilet tissue and a protected 4th round pick from 1976.

now a scenario emerges (even if only in david locke's head) for them to trade al for one of the smartest big men on the planet, a two-time champion, an elite passer from the post and elbow, AND a good citizen, and we're turning up our noses.

it's simple: he destroys the summer of '13, when we could pick up a key (if not THEE key) piece for the endured success of the franchise. If he were 5 years younger it would be an absolute no-brainer. But... it's not.

Or if the Jazz were a few years ahead of where they are now with the rebuild, and Gasol would make the Jazz an instant title contender, it would also be a no-brainer. With that not being the case, I think it would be best for the Jazz to stay away from this deal if the Lakers were to offer it in the first place.

Much rather have Pau than Iggy or Deng. And I'm pretty sure Minny was starting it's Pau Package with DW2. Indy might even have enough cap space now to just take Pau, though probably they're a little short even if they tossed in Hansbrough and scraps. In any case, it really depends on whether you think Pau was just the odd man out in the offense last year or is winding down. I think he's got 2 good years. I also hate losing the cap space. I could be convinced either way on a Pau deal.

i'm not saying the jazz should do the deal. like i said, i think the whole rumor is total horse crap and nothing the lakers would even consider. so i'm not talking about pau in particular, i'm talking about how the goal is to get great players, and cap space is a means to that end.

we're not getting james harden. it's just not happening. so why hold out hope and pass up opportunities to bring a proven star to the team just in the name of having cap space. again, i'm talking philosophically here, not because i think KOC has mitch kupchak on hold while he checks what we all think.

and, back to what i've been saying all summer... the jazz need to trade al, and if you can trade him for a star-level player at ANY position, you do it.

You got a lot out of those two sentences I wrote.

I live in CA too, so I guess we're equally qualified concerning this subject. I also had Pau on my fantasy team last year so booyah!

It isn't as simple as an age related decline. Obviously athletes decline as they age, but in this case, it had a lot to do with Bynum. Pau didn't decline that much just because he was a year older. Bynum was healthy and they had a new coach who made Bynum more of a focal point. Bynum and Pau don't complement each other. That's the issue.

I would take Pau in a heartbeat and agree with those who say he has 3 elite years left. Pau is a better and smarter player than Al, without question. Plus, he's arguably the best passing big man in the game. Something Al will never be. This hypothetical trade would be a no brainer.

Nobody has claimed that Pau isn't vastly superior to Al. I'm looking at $38 million dollars over two years, $19 million of which annihilates our FA spree.

Agreed. Was primarily pointing out that Pau hasn't declined as much as you suggested.

it wasn't hard.

I like the two leaps you make:

1. That I'm incapable of getting fully erect
2. That I haven't been watching Jazz games for decades, thus not being able to "erect" myself at a perfectly orchestrated "Early-Oop".

I'll have you know that I live in Utah, and when Stockton made his shot, just a little bit of white stuff ran down my leg.
