What's new

Dennis Lindsey: We will be VERY active in free agency

I listened to his interview. I think we put reasonable assets on the table that would have worked before the draft started but once guys like Korkmaz and Davis fell those picks became too valuable to the teams like Philly that had multiple picks.

I think he was genuine.

I do think we will get a player that makes our team deeper similar to the way Hill does. They will likely be 1 - 2 vets who help us close games and teach the kids.

Surely we will be calling guys like Beal, Durant, Derozan, etc. but who knows if we have a chance.

My favorite (and attainable) picks are:

Pau Gasol
Ryan Anderson

Reviewing a list of free agents, i would add:

Luol Deng
Joakim Noah

We are going to be missing our enforcer - booker. So, I could see us grab a guy like Tyler Hansbrough or Nene or Matt Barnes (though I doubt he is someone we would grab).

I think that is a tough ask and could hurt in our chances to keep them long term. If you get Millsap, he's a starter without a doubt. He has earned that.

I just see it like this. Who is better for the next 2 years between Favors and Millsap? Millsap. Who is better in 2 years for the Jazz next to Gobert between Lyles and Favors? I personally think it would be Lyles due to Favors eventually losing a step, Lyles development, passing, spreading the floor, etc.

So we would trade Favors right now in the height of his value and we get better for the next two years. Millsap's comprehensive play, leadership and experience could make us contenders.

I like it. I think Favors is as good as he's going to get-pretty good at times but no killer instinct at all. On the other hand I could see Lyles becoming deadly.

Durant isn't coming to Utah. He has narrowed his search to six teams. Utah is not one of them. Jazz are not bringing back Millsap. They are already talking about extending Favors.

Noah is probably going to NY, at least they are pursuing him. Besides Noah is a big city guy. He also doesn't want to come off the bench.

I would think some player like Jared Dudley would be in the mix. Jazz missing the playoffs has probably prevented then from being in the mix for a top tier free agent.

I feel the best realistic scenario will be if we added Pau Gasol for 2 years as our third big. That would be a great move!

Crawford tweeted out "time for a change". He would be a great 2 year contract to pair up with Gasol and G. Hill. That 3 of them would bring tremendous vet presence. We can pay them more than other teams are willing to pay for vets without affecting our future because we can front load 2 year deals.

Also, if we can't get Gasol, Taj Gibson is rumored to be part of a trade. Think Trey burke, second round pick, and non-guaranteed Pleiss, and Jackson contracts. Is it enough to give the bulls flexibility to chase whoever they are chasing? Taj is a 1 year, $8.6 million dollar rental.

Love it.

Pau has missed something like 5 games in his whole 16 year NBA career and none in the last three years. His production hasn't tapered at all and last year his numbers even went up in some areas on a per 36 basis. He would probably be a great influence on our young team, too.

Of course, he'll probably end up with the Spurs.

I would lower your expectations. The top down addition was already made with Hill.

There are some scenarios where we might sneak away a decent name, but we are likely talking about adding a fourth big or fourth wing.

A few names I kind of like:

Darrell Arthur - can play with all of our other bigs. Not a center but might do well enough there to make it work.

Jonas Jerebko - I think Boston will use their space and either release the guy or trade him for a second rounder.

PJ Tucker... has been stated before, but he'd be good.

The money available is crazy and so Free Agents just have too many options. I think it might be wise to find someone on an expiring deal and trade to address our needs. Some of the contracts handed out this offseason will look bad in a year or two... unlike last year where it was pretty tough to sign a bad contract.

Love Gasol, but he's missed plenty of games over his career (sprained ankle, knee tendinitis, sprained and then torn plantar fasciitis and a concussion). He's clearly an All Star and would be a great acquisition, but I think it would be a better fit for the Jazz to bring him in off the bench, limit his minutes and give him rest throughout the season. We want him at his best in the playoffs. Pau Gasol would be the clever, crafty scorer inside that the Jazz need and he can realistically play with any of Gobert, Favors and Lyles.

If KD goes to Golden State, they'll have to get rid of salary. We could pick up Bogut for very little. We already have been a good trading partner with Golden State. A great move that would immediately improve our inside offense, and add to our interior D. Bogut is a free agent after 17, so if we want to keep him it may cause salary issues in the future.

Oops, yeah... duh. I just looked at games started. Now I remember him being out a ton. At least his per 36 number haven't dropped off.

One Love is right, but we can always dream. Maybe we could give him a guaranteed coaching position after he's done... A lifetime season pass to Vail City?

To me, one solid FA makes sense. Two is going to severely limit playing time for other guys who are deserving. Personally, I'd love Gasol on a short-term deal but I just can't see him coming here to come off the bench. I'm not saying he should. He's still better than Favors and Gobert but that's likely what we'd want. And his signing would also mean cut time for the other bigs. But let's say we did sign him.

Exum (24), Hill (24)
Hood (12), Exum (4), Hill (4), Burks (26)
Hayward (32), Hood (16)
Favors (20), Lyles (12), Gasol (16)
Gobert (28), Favors (8), Gasol (12)

Or something like this. Hayward would get 32 minutes. Everyone else would get 28 and be fresh as ****. No reason for crazy wear and tear or tiring badly. Lyles would get just 12 is the only downside.

There's no way Pau's coming to join a rebuilding team like Utah, are you kidding me?!?!

If the Jazz had made the playoffs like they should have, nobody would be considering them to be a rebuilding team. I think everyone can see that they're a team on the rise. Hell, even with all of the injury issues they had last year, if you add George Hill and Pau Gasol to the team, the Jazz are easily in the playoffs and likely contending for the 4th or 5th seed. Depending on what happens with Durant in OKC and Duncan/Parker/Ginobili in SA, there could be a major shakeup at the top of the Western Conference.

Improved PG play and veteran leadership will do wonders for this team. The Jazz have relied on a rookie starter at PG for most of the past three season (Burke 2103 - Exum 2014 - Neto 2015). The rebuild is over. They might still be in the player development stage (slightly), but it's win-now mode, and the Jazz have 5 starters under contract, no major free agency issues until next year, tons of cap space and (good but not great) assets to burn.

OK but if I were Pau, my body's starting to break down.. I've probably got a maximum of 2 productive years left in me... and I'm searching for 1 may be 2 more rings... I wouldn't consider the Jazz.

I like Rudy and favs, but I believe they create some liability on offense, this could be exploited in close games or in the playoffs. I don't know if Gasol is the answer, but I like the thinking.

Eh, would be easy to convince an old man who already has rings to come off the bench and extend his career. Cash talks, Gasol walks.
