Did Steve Young do a mission?

I could see the Covey family not liking Anae. That dude is really rough around the edges. I've read some quotes from Covey where he talks about being a visitor in the locker room before the USC and Oregon games. He said seeing the passion and excitement for PAC 12 football is what swayed him to make his choice, so it could be that the Utes just did a really good job of recruiting him.
I don't like anae

Right? Why is that guy such an A-hole?
I don't know but every interview I have heard with him, he acts like a dick to the person interviewing him.

I also think he has called too many runs up the middle over the years. I feel like he is too conservative.

On the other hand, if it were up to me I would call way too many pass plays and be way too aggressive and would an offense designed by me would probably suck

But ya, he does seem like an a-hole

Here's the truth around Covey.

Stephen Covey, Britain's older bro who graduated from Timpview the same year Unga, Ashworth, and Matt Reynolds did, was just as explosive offensively. However, at that time Anae was highly entrenched in his traditional offense. Covey went to BYU to play QB and special teams. Anae though, never actually gave covey the chance to play QB. The relationship turned sour as Covey never got playing time and Anae became increasingly (verbally) abusive.

since then Anae was fired and was exposed to the "go fast" and "go hard" offense. Since his serving of humble pie I think he's a little better. He'd be open now to a running QB or a smaller WR (like covey).

However, when this covey came through, because of the past experience with his brother, this covey wouldn't give BYU the chance even if they had recruited him as a QB.

The only logical choice was to either go to Utah St or Utah.

Covey wasn't recruited by Utah as much as Anae ran off the family between 06-10 by never giving Stephen a chance and then becoming verbal abusive later on. He would call Covey "entitled" or "trash that was only recruited because of his family's money." It was bad. To this day I'm not sure why no one put an end to it. Especially when you consider several other coaches on the staff knew the Covey family and had sons who played high school ball with him (Reynolds & Kaufusi)

Covey isn't the only traditional BYU family that Anae has scared off. Like I said, I think he's a little better now. But before he was fired and before he went to Arizona, he was one arrogant SOB.

Nobody likes Anae.

It's a fact.

This is closer to the truth than Covey was soooooo "enamored" with the Utes and the PAC 12.

Anae in many ways has been the best recruiting tool for all of the other in state teams.

He's a little better now. But before he was fired the dude was a complete and utter D bag. It's pretty well known among coaching circles that he and Bronco didn't see eye to eye at all.

Their relationship is a little better now... A little.

Thanks for the story, but if you don't mind, I think I'll still give Utah just the tiniest shred of credit, if that's ok with you.

But even if your story is dead on, how nice for Covey? The school with all your family heritage runs you off and your fall back option is the school up the street sporting a PAC 12 affiliation and owning recent dominance over the school that mistreated your family.

he was one arrogant SOB.

Let's be honest. He had the best offense in the state the first go around, and has a very good offense now, considering how little talent he has.

What he has done with Beck, Hall, Hill, and now Magnum is very impressive.

He should be arrogant. He offense is the third best this state has ever seen. I'd put them in this order:

#1 - Urban's/Chow's. Urban is #1 because it was so explosive and created a #1 pick. Chow is #1 because it was so revolutionary and lasted so long.
#3 - Anae.

Has the state had another OC that is in this conversation? Maybe Fassell's offense when he was at Utah. Anae has every right to be arrogant and BYU was dumb to get rid of him the first time around.

You think that being arrogant is a good thing? To you it is some sort of right that successful people earn? I think that arrogance is a negative personality trait and I have far more admiration for successful people who are not arrogant.

Somewhat true. The running the family off has been brewing for decades now. Google Sean Covey and you'll see.

You know how most players hate getting injured? You know how coaches sometimes pledge that players won't lose positions to injuries? Yeah well... You sort of had something like that happen in 88-89. Covey lost his position due to injury (and well because there was another QB they were pushing). It was handed to someone else. And that someone else made history.

So in the end it worked out for Byu just like dumping Alex smith probably as the better move for the Niners. But let's just say that There isn't any loge lost between some of the family and that school.

I'm not sure saying Covey lost his job to injury is entirely accurate. Detmer saved BYU's bacon in several games that season, leading the team to multiple 2nd half comeback wins after replacing an ineffective Covey, including the freedom bowl against Colorado where he was named MVP of a game he didn't even start. Detmer was simply a better player and it was obvious very early.
