The latest from Shams.

For the past several weeks, all eyes have been on the Utah Jazz and Lauri Markkanen. The Jazz have operated in concurrent lanes with Markkanen’s future: open to listening to trade offers from serious suitors while maintaining interest in keeping him as a franchise centerpiece. Markkanen is eligible for an extension Aug. 6. The Jazz are in a rebuild, so rival teams have wondered about Markkanen’s fit moving forward. Utah officials want to keep the 2023 NBA All-Star and Most Improved Player unless a team truly wows it with an offer.

The Golden State Warriors have been the most engaged team for Markkanen in recent weeks, as league sources tell The Athletic they have discussed a proposal around Moses Moody, multiple first-round picks, multiple pick swaps and multiple second-round picks. The Jazz, however, have asked for the bulk of young talent and capital the Warriors possess, including Moody, Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski, along with picks, which has been a non-starter thus far for Golden State, league sources said.

Markkanen — who would be the most coveted 2025 free agent in the prime of his career — has an amount of leverage in all of this as well. Any team willing to give significant assets for the 7-foot big man would likely desire assurances that he would have interest in a long-term deal.

For Markkanen, a renegotiation-and-extension allows him to receive more money now. For him to reach his maximum salary in 2025-26, the Jazz would need to raise his 2024-25 salary to at least $33,138,600, which requires at least $15.09 million in cap space for the current season. One component to watch for: Markkanen is eligible to be traded next season if he signs the extension on the first day of eligibility Aug. 6 — but not tradable if signed after that date.

Thanks for the good work.

That reporting *feels* accurate to me, in that it only mentions Moody being on the table. Pairing that with the @Tony Jones read/intel (and my own thinking) that the Jazz are not very interested in Kuminga, I think Podz is the most decisive piece.

And I am assuming the draft capital is along the lines of 25/27/29 super swaps, 26/28/30 picks (maybe some light protections*), and maybe a 2031 swap*.

*maybe GSW is trying to protect ‘30 ~1-3 and pushing to ‘31 if not conveyed).

I love Podz and think we should be demanding him right now....but when August 6th comes around, I think I'd be OK taking all the picks + Moody.
If that’s the case then they give up all rights to all of their 1sts + some 2nds.

But IDK, I think I gotta get Podz because part of the magic of the deal is hurting their current and 2nd timeline.

Unless they are moving Kuminga to a 3rd team with an overpay package coming back to the Jazz, there is no deal without Podz.

I don’t see a deal happening neither.

Also Lauri could be the perfect mentor to Cody, cause of that I put the chance at him being traded at less than 10%.

I would understand it. I would probably prefer an alternate tank route though and extend Lauri. I think Podz is the pivot point in the deal and GS gotta decide if they want to let that get in the way of competing in Steph's golden years.

No one will want to pay for Kuminga. You see teams balking at paying guys already this summer. No one wants to guess on an extension right now and he could still be a mystery box next year that gets an offer that makes you queasy. I'm guessing the offer would be like 1 first straight up.

Then nothing is going to happen. I think there is probably a better offer out there than just a first.

Maybe the Spurs have some interest? That would be the team that makes the most sense to me. Maybe the Hornets? I'm thinking of the bad/young teams who have been tanking for a while and might want to push the team forward with more mature young talent. The Raptors (he has Masai Guy written all over him)?

I saw this trade on Fanspo and I think this is what would probably be the basement of what they would accept.

Jazz get 3 first, Moody/Podz/Boucher, and two swaps. Two first from Warriors in 26/28 and the Indiana first in 26.

I just think we need to be realistic about how much Lauri can yield through trade. He's not worth Wemby + 10 FRP. The Warriors "all the picks" is already right there with what the Knicks traded for Bridges. Then you add in Moody on top of that who is not worth nothing. Of course you ask for everything, but expecting more than Bridges "godfather" offer seems unrealistic. Moody+all the picks already meets/exceeds the Bridges package. We're not getting Podz+Moody+all the picks. So any trade with Podz you're also losing pick value.

Unless the Jazz already have deals for Sexton/Kessler lined up, I'm really not to excited about entering the season as is. And I'm the one saying we're still likely going to suck.

We don't have to trade Lauri.

The best one is almost certainly not trading him for an underwhelming package just because that's the best offer on the table. A package without Podz really isn't worth discussing unless we're in a position where we have to trade him.

Well, everyone can have their own opinion on that. If Podz is in the deal, we’re certainly getting less picks. I don’t think Lauri is worth significantly more than Bridges nor do I think he will yield that through trade. To me, all the picks + Moody is not underwhelming. OTOH, going into the season as we are isn’t this incredible option that I’m in love with.
