McMaster has given new insight into just how easy it was for foreign leaders to outwit Trump, who has been desperate to paint himself as a strongman on the international stage.
According to The New York Times, McMaster wrote that he once tried to prepare Trump for a trip to China in November 2017, the “most consequential” stop on the former president’s tour through Asia. McMaster recalled attempting to explain to Trump that Chinese President Xi Jinping would attempt to get Trump to say things that were good for China, but not in the best interest of the U.S. and its allies. McMaster warned Trump to steel himself, and the former president seemed to understand.
When it came time to meet with Xi, however, everything came apart. Trump ended up mindlessly agreeing with Xi that South Korea’s military exercises were “provocative” and a “waste of time.” Trump also suggested that China might have a legitimate claim to the Senkaku Islands, which have been controlled by Japan since 1895.
Dismayed, McMaster wrote a note to Trump’s chief of staff, General John Kelly, bluntly stating that Xi “ate our lunch.””

But wait, Putin respected Trump, would never have invaded Ukraine if Trump were in the Oval Office. Right? Well, I don’t know, but it’s clear Putin thought of Trump as a child:

American soldiers died. They were acting in service to our country and it cost them their lives. These 12 soldiers, Americans, human beings with families are dead now. Not a single person should be surprised by any of this. But the right will call it all lies and misinformation because, very unfortunately, that tactic works the very best with their base. Of course it matters. But Donald Trump broke the law putting a campaign video together, and posting it to TikTok. He did not have to do that. They are two different things. I’m not a veteran. Why don’t you run your spin by some veterans? I’m sure you’ll find some that agree with you. And those who do not. You want me to say their opinion is worthless? You want me to say shame on them for criticizing Trump? I quoted 22 year combat veteran Fred Wellman’s opinion. You want me to attack, or trash, his opinion? Again, why don’t you ask him if their deaths matter? Many veterans have voiced their opinions, and I’ve read, but not posted, many of their comments. Many feel as I do, not simply combat veterans. I did not create the situation at Arlington. But I’m entitled to my own opinion, without someone suggesting I need to clean up my morality. I mean here you are trying to make me feel guilty? lol.

New details suggest Trump’s Arlington controversy won’t end soon
As Trump characterized himself as a victim the in Arlington controversy, his campaign team called the office of the Army Secretary a bunch of “hacks.”

For his part, the Republican nominee delivered public remarks on the matter for the first time hours later, misstated the date of his visit to Arlington, bragged about being on time for the event at the cemetery, characterized himself as a victim of smear, and concluded that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris “killed” American service members in Afghanistan. If that sounds ridiculous and offensive, it’s because it was ridiculous and offensive.
Around the same time, Trump campaign adviser Chris LaCivita, on the heels of publicly criticizing the official who works at the cemetery, issued a statement online that called the office of the Army Secretary a bunch of “hacks.”
So to recap, the former president — who remains burdened by a dreadful record related to respecting U.S. troops and veterans — isn’t just caught up in a controversy about exploiting one of the nation’s most sacred spaces and ignoring Arlington’s rules against politicization, his campaign team is simultaneously picking a public fight with the United States Army less than 10 weeks from Election Day.
Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, there’s a burgeoning conversation about uncovering answers that have not yet reached the public. Politico reported:
VoteVets, a progressive veterans group, wasted little time in throwing its public support behind the Democratic senator’s efforts, and there’s a related push underway from several House Democrats.
Mark Esper, who served as Trump’s Defense Secretary, has also called for an investigation into the incident.

They are indeed two different things. Twelve American soldiers lost their lives. They are dead. That is a thing. Maybe video of honoring that sacrifice was posted to the wrong platform. I simply don't think that compares to 12 lives being snuffed out. There may be two different things there but they aren't equal. If find it sad and more than a little shameful that every time the loss of life is brought up, the supposed violation of regulations is used to change the subject as if to pretend the soldiers who lost their lives isn't worth acknowledging. I disagree with those using this tactic. I think the fallen soldiers do matter.

I’ll just say that it’s really disturbing to me that the army official that Trump and his minions bullied in Arlington has reportedly refused to press charges or tell their story out of fear of retaliation. This shows that Trump’s efforts to wear down democratic norms and promote authoritarianism is working. This is how dictators in the 21st century take over. They don’t necessarily need to raise an army or overturn elections. They can take over through:
Intimidation
Corrupting the courts
Buying off media
Promising the spoils of the country to the rich and powerful
Spreading paranoia and conspriacy
Exploiting prejudices
It’s just really worrisome to me how much Trump and Fox News have worn this country down.

Well, did I or anyone else say they were equal? 13 dead servicemen. Some like to point out that maybe the bomber that day was one of the 5000 Taliban fighters Trump had released. You know, extend the blame into the previous administration.
But 13 dead serviceman is certainly more tragic than an ex-president feeling rules don’t apply to him, and thinking that making a campaign video was OK, the warnings he and his team were given simply don’t apply to him. I did think it very telling that the Army actually rebuked his campaign.
But some veterans did elevate their dismay at politics at Arlington.

To my mind, only a dishonorable individual would ignore clear instructions, and do this at Arlington. Many are including this latest with his several other alleged instances, and well known comments not alleged, demeaning the military and showing extraordinary comments of disrespect toward those Americans who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their nation. This man simply has no honor. Pointing that opinion out is a fair part of the reaction to Trump’s show at Arlington.
This is wrong and it’s OK to react in the way many have. The people at Arlington told him what was not done at Arlington. And one of his team called the Office of the Secretary of the Army “a bunch of hacks” in response to instructions on the do’s and dont’s of behavior at Arlington. It’s OK to find that offensive, and disrespectful, once again.

Weird how Trumptards and even normal Republicans are so appalled by 13 deaths yet they were cheerleading the Bush invasion of Iraq, which was based on outright fabrications. How many American lives were taken or ruined by that one? I also remember the exact same people on "conservative" news completely chuffed at the killing of Iraqi civilians and sacrificing Americans. Remember the Scud missiles? OMG, the Scuds are going to get us!

Trump turns to Truth Social to share sexual jokes and calls for ‘military tribunals’
As the presidential candidates head into the most heated phase of the election year, former President Donald Trump has made a tone shift on Truth Social.
Just this week, trump reposted messages calling for his political opponents to be jailed, calling for a return of “public military tribunals” for people like former President Barack Obama, as well as making a graphic sexual joke about Vice President Kamala Harris and Democrat Hillary Clinton, his opponent in 2016. The repost of the sexual joke now appears to have been removed from Trump’s profile. (Trump's continued call for "military tribunals" for civilians is disconcerting. It points to a mindset of a system of government controlled by a single entity using the military as the backbone of compliance monitoring. Sound familiar? Germany in 1939 perhaps?)
But you’d only see that if you’re a user of Truth Social. On other more mainstream platforms like X and TikTok, Trump has maintained a more even tone, one seemingly designed for consumption by a much wider swath of American voters.
On Truth Social, Trump has been able to feed the frenzy of fans who post more extreme conspiracy theories and calls to action, while maintaining a far more manicured presence on larger platforms like X.
On Wednesday, Trump made and shared a particularly extreme series of posts on Truth.
“How to actually fix the system,” one Truth repost read, with photoshopped images of Hilary Clinton, President Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former public health official Anthony Fauci, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Harris all sitting in orange jumpsuits behind prison bars.
In March, he shared a video that included an image of Biden bound in the back of a pickup truck. And in July, he reposted another call for a “televised military tribunal” for former Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney and a quote from Ulysses S. Grant after the start of the Civil War, in which he said: “There are but two parties now: traitors and patriots.” (trump definitely calls for violence in these not so subtle ways)
“This attack is so, just, beneath a campaign, especially a presidential campaign, that it does make sense for the Harris campaign to ignore it and to allow it to speak for itself,” Curbelo said. “Ultimately, this ends up hurting him with the types of swing voters who will ultimately decide this election.”
On TikTok, which Trump joined in June after trying to ban the app while in office, he has similarly posted content that is relatively tame by comparison. (lol, trump tried to ban tik tok while president and now he has a tik tok account)
