What's new

Don't Ask, Don't Tell is officially history!!

Pretty low blow for someone who served his country with integrity. You expect tolerance from people but obviously don't tolerate the alternative opinion. Pathetic.

This!!!!

Once again, Katie's hypocrisy is pretty glaring.

But that's ok, we don't have to be tolerant to John McCain. He shares an opinion that I don't agree with. Maybe we should ban John McCain? I want to see the katie apologists bail her out of this one. They always seemed to have an excuse. What's their excuse going to be this time? Did John McCain drive thousands of homosexuals to commit suicide too just like Bro Packer?

sigh....

I do agree w/McCain in one respect, doesn't the military have enough to deal with already? I guess fighting 2 wars is easy anyway....

I don't think you understand how bigotry or prejudice works or why it's relevant to the rules of this site or society at large. I'll also address Marcus, Clutch, and Hopper since I'm nearly positive he's still lurking.

Taking issue with something someone has said, a stance they've made, or an action committed is reactionary and valid. Taking issue with the benign nature of a person's existence is not. How is this confusing?

Nobody has a problem with McCain because he served in war, but he doesn't get a free pass on every issue for the rest of his life because of that, either. He's done some transparently pandering and cowardly things over the years just as he's done some great things. Katie's argument is not that he's bad because he's straight, or white, or something that he doesn't have control over. Attacking the things he has control over - just as anyone else's - is fair game.

Also, how does having a policy of kicking out 'our' service members equate to helping 'our' war? Also, Packer is a hateful piece of garbage that is out of touch with even the religion he represents. He's the Beantown of the presidency of The Church.

If you really have a problem with this change in policy, you're simply a fool. The discomfort a homophobe has of homosexuality is a barrier that should be challenged at every turn just like every social barrier that ever stood between a person and opportunity. I didn't hate Don't Ask Don't Tell since it was progress at the time it was implemented, but that doesn't it make it less of a silly embarrassment. Our armed forces and our society will be stronger for this decision having been made. It's inconceivable to me to think otherwise.

Once again Numberica gets it when others don't.

Jon Stewart has this to add.

katie got called out, not because McCain gets a free pass due to his military service but because in a beautiful bit of irony, she used the same type of stereotypes she so despises in others.

My guess is that ending Don't ask, Don't tell will have little to no effect in how gays serve in the military. The overwhelming majority will choose to keep it to themselves.

The difference now is that when they revealed as gay by accident or malice, they will be able to continue to serve.

Tolerating differences is not the same as tolerating bigotry.

Just from knowing a few soldiers and knowing their opinions. I am okay with getting rid of don't ask, don't tell and I hope I am wrong and there aren't any incidents. I guess we'll see.

That has not been my experience in the Navy. There was a lesbian woman working for me in my workcenter. She was pretty open and had zero problems with anyone. There were also a few guys I knew were gay, they were not open to me about it but didn't seem to be hiding it, either. Again, they seemed to get their jobs done just fine, along with everyone around them.

I can imagine there is an argument to be made that it is different in combat units in the Army and Marines, but my own experience in one particular branch leads me to believe that this will not cause any major problems.

so what scientific studies prove that being gay is not a choice.
imho being gay is a choice so they have control over being gay so i can attack them right?

whatever you chose to call it, there are people who do not approve of homosexual relationships, and/or are not comfortable around openly gay people and it seems stupid to argue over whether or not such folks should be called names for their beliefs

getting rid of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy may lead to some difficult situations, and it seems pretty foolish to me to completely discount that possibility, but it's also stupid to let the fear of some possible unpleasant situations be the reason to maintain the policy

Some people act like they think every gay serviceman has a hidden "Sgt. Klinger" personality that's just waiting to be released or something, but somehow I doubt that's the case. My prediction is that folks in general won't really notice that much of a difference.
