Evens signs 3 year 5.5 million

Are you comfortable with Evans as our 4th big?
What are you talking about fourth big?

Ok, let's pretend that it is Millsap that is traded though it could as easily be AL. That leaves Favors, Kanter, and Al, so Jeremy is the fourth big, right? right?

Wrong, remember that Marvin Williams subbed in at the four and I'm sure that with his experience he would be a better fourth big than Evans, so Evans can still be the fifth big some seem to want him to be unless he proves himself otherwise.

Now for what I wanted to write about: I can admit when I was wrong, and I thought that the Jazz would lose Evans if he won the dunk contest, which he did. Guess I was wrong, though I wonder if this is part of why they were aggressive in re-upping him now instead of letting the market decide. Pay a touch more now instead of hoping nobody noticed him win the contest. Regardless, I'm glad he's staying for reasons I have already posted earlier.

It's a fairly low cost for a player with pretty good upside. If he adds some muscle and moves into a 4th big role he'll certainly be worth more than he's being paid. If he doesn't get larger and stays in that 5th big role he's still probably a good deep injury insurance and practice player. And for that kind of cash is not a terrible deal.
I don't ever see him being a rotation player. And he really doesn't seem to have the frame to add much weight.
What he is, is a crowd-favorite, team energizer and a guy who just loves to be on the team, doing the Jazz circuit every summer. A contract for less than $2M is pretty much a vet minimum deal. Jeremy may always be the 12th man, but he's a good one to have. He can get minutes if necessary and when he does, fans and teammates cheer for a highlight dunk. Good for Evans, good for the Jazz, great for the fans!

i read this as the jazz saying 'thank you jeremy' for the first piece of silverware we've seen in a long time.

$5.5 million seems reasonable for someone with his skill set although he is going to see even fewer minutes with the arrival of marvin and the presumed re-signing of demarre.

3 years was probably unnecessary and i'd be surprised if he was still on our roster (or anyone's roster) at the end of it. in fact there's every chance he's been re-signed so that he can be included as part of a trade.

I am totally cool with this one. Evans is a superstar in my kids eyes. He's the nicest guy on the planet if you have met him. Great for him and Great for the Jazz. Win win.

HE IS NOT A POWER FORWARD!!!

He should be an athletic wing that runs the floor on fast breaks and plays good perimeter defense. He should be looked at like Ronnie Brewer or David Benoit were.

HE IS NOT A POWER FORWARD!!!
yeah he is, sorry, but he doesn't have the ball handling skills to play anything else. No dribble penetration, no full court press, no crossovers, just amazing hops and a long frame. That's the reason he's getting only 5.5 for 3.

Now if he can improve on these things that might change, but even though he hasn't been in the NBA for very long he is only roughly a year and a half younger than grizzled NBA vet Marvin Williams.

Jeremy is who he is, though he may be able to polish his game some hopefully, he still isn't going to suddenly become Dwight Howard or Kevin Durant. (sorry for the wet blanket)

I figure they're paying him little enough that if he's able to contribute to a few wins here and there, great. If he keeps warming the bench and never bulks up, meh. At least we can expect some good garbage time dunks.

Ok, let's ponder why they re-upped him now then instead of making him wait until nearly before the season starts to make an offer like they have for EVERY single non superstar they have had as restricted free agents. Name the last restricted free agent that has been offered by the Jazz first instead of the player getting offered by another team first: CJ: other team. Millsap: other team. Wes Matthews: other team (ourch) Mo Williams: other team (double ouch) Those are the ones I can think of right now, while some others were traded before their contracts were up or they weren't renewed, Jeremy is the only one I can remember right now that was signed by the Jazz mid way through free agency rather than letting the market decide. Who else? anyone?

I've always thought that the Jazz needed to be more proactive with their restricted free agents. Granted, this is just Jeremy Evans, but maybe it's the start of a shift in strategy going forward.

Yes, other teams are going to spend a lot of money on our 200 lb PF who has two skills: dunking and blocking shots from help side defense. I like Evans, but lets not pretend he was going to be some hot commodity. We're re-signing him because he's a good bench player. He's not going to complain about not playing, he has a great attitude and he's a hard worker. That is why we re-signed him. It's not that difficult to figure out.

Wait? What? No entiendo.

Great signing. KOC hid him well and now can play him without worrying about Paul Allen's prying eyes.

In the amount of minutes and times that he plays, it doesn't matter what position he is. He could be the PG without any appreciable effect on the outcome.
