Exum Update

Locke today foretelling the short leash Dante will be afforded upon return. Weird that he thinks he can't just at least take AB's minutes for a start.

I didn't get that at all from Locke's podcast. He talked about the difficulty of re-integrating a player after a long injury. In the heat of the playoff race Dante might be more of a speedbump. He referred to all-star millsap last night in Denver. I thought he was simply tempering expectations.

He will probably go down and play with the G-league I would assume. At least for a week or so. That will be good for both partys IMO.

Locke has always been a bit of an Exum hater. I don't know what it is but somebody that he talks to a lot on the staff is not a huge Exum fan, I think. Putting Exum on a short leash is just such a dumbass way to proceed, but it doesn't surprise me that Locke thinks this way.

to be fair, if history has anything to say about it, Exum very well may put himself on a short leash. He's timid. Also, having Exum on a long leash after some bad injuries and missing a ton of time is probably not going to help our chances of making the post season. So the FO has to decide which is more important.

Dante wasn't timid last year, especially near the end of the season. He wasn't timid in the preseason. This is a 3 year old observation. The only thing that made him tentative at times was that last year he would get benched for a TO instead of the coaches prioritizing his learning while making mistakes. I completely reject the idea that Exum on a long leash is going to hurt the team. He's always played within the system for the most part. He's been a willing passer and defender. He'll help the team. I don't think you need to worry about Dante turning in to mid season Rubio (who they let play through all that reckless stuff he was doing nightly). Just treat him like your other good young talents. Let him play free. Donovan still makes mistakes that hurt the team every game and they just live with them. Dante should be treated the same way.

I don't understand why you'd give a player you're evaluating for a contract a short leash. It makes no sense to sit him if he is physically able to play and prove his worth. If he plays poorly it may hurt our chances of making the playoff's and getting swept in the first round. Conversely, if he plays well and helps to get into that same situation we know we have a piece going forward. At this point figuring where we will be in the future with Mitchell and Gobert, as well as who will complement their talent is the most important thing. I say give him a chance to sink or swim, on as large of a sample size and as safely as possible.

I knew it wasn't just me ....that has always thought Locke was a Dante doubter.I've not listened to Locke much since he was creaming his jeans over George Hll all year last year. That turned out to be the wrong move. I've had Exum riding out his contract with Utah for awhile just from how Locke reports on Exum.
Jazz are becoming un athletic with all their moves and are going to be starving for points while the rest of the League is scoring more points. Already happening with Crowder and O'Neale getting major minutes.
Doesn't make sense to not use the fresh legs of Exum who has big experience with Utah already and keep a short leash on him AGAIN...just say good-bye to Exum who doesn't deserve a short leash on him anymore.

It will be interesting how Quin uses Dante's quick 1st step in his 'advantage offense' system. Surely we see more than Dante sitting in a corner...
You would hope so. That first step and overall speed plus his length is legit.

He's always been able to get to good spots on the floor... his handle and finishing were the struggles. The finishing seemed better in SL and second half last year. It is still awkward looking though.

He's either incredibly unique and develops in a versatile wing/pg or he's just not that good. He may forever remain a mystery.
