Favors got extended

After sleeping a night over the extension I don't see it too critical any longer. Malone is a Utah Jazz employee and if he says he can get Favors up to speed to perform good enough offensively to make his contract seem good value overall then I should trust him and complain later if it doesn't pan out and somehow the Jazz find themselves cap strangled. But for now I'm okay with it and will see how it pans out.
A hoopsworld writer(Nate Duncan) who is very analytical and I share his opinion on lots of basketball things, seems very excited about the extension from a Jazz standpoint.
These are his tweets about it:

That Jazz/Favors extension is fair. I think if anything a good deal for the Jazz. Favors may already be worth $12 mm for his D.

I would rather have Favors than Cousins, and the Jazz got him for a lot cheaper.

Lol! 49 million?

Jeez. And to think, jazzfanz for years called real starting big men who could actually score (Boozer and Memo) overpaid.

Favors fouls way too much and has yet to develop a single offensive move. I wouldn't have extended him quite yet. I don't know if he can even play more than 25 mins per game due to his foul trouble and offensive liability. People act as if he's Karl Malone. In reality, if he could just be Larry sanders, bird man, or hell, Bogur (post elbow injury) that would be a significant step for him.

If favors can bet himself 49 million just imagine what Hayward and kanter will. Those guys can actually score too.
Favors is already a better defender than Memo and Boozer combined. Hell on the defensive end the Jazz would probably have been better off with just Favors instead of both Memo and Boozer. This is a good contract for him as he is right now. A defensive big who can change a game on that side. I hope he gets better offensively. But to live up to this contract as a big it really is not required.
.
I like the pairing of Favors and Kanter because one seems to be a natural defender and the other is looking like he could be the anchor of an offense.

Of course I exaggerated.

However, it's simply unbelievable how overrated favors has become on this board.

IMO, kanter has already shown much more promise than favors. And that's not really saying much.
Offensively yes. But Favors in not only showing he can dominate the boards but that he can defend at an elite level. Favors should be guarding the better offensive player of a teams PF/C combo just to hide Kanter on defense. Not that Kanter is not adequate at defense Favors is just better. Just like Favors is adequate on offense and Kanter is just better.

For comparison's sake:

Carlos Boozer $15,300,000 $16,800,000
Al Jefferson $13,500,000 $13,500,000 $13,500,000
Brook Lopez $14,694,000 $15,719,000 $16,774,000
Tyson Chandler $14,100,538 $14,596,888
Joakim Noah $12,100,000 $13,150,000 $14,200,000
Andrew Bynum $12,250,000 $12,540,000
Roy Hibbert $14,283,844 $14,898,938 $15,514,031
Larry Sanders $3,053,368 $11,000,000 $11,000,000 $11,000,000 $11,000,000
Al Horford $12,000,000 $12,000,000 $12,000,000
Dwight Howard $20,513,178 $21,436,271 $22,359,364 $23,282,457
Tiago Splitter $10,000,000 $9,250,000 $8,500,000 $8,250,000
JaVale McGee $10,750,000 $11,250,000 $12,000,000
Nikola Pekovic $12,100,000 $12,100,000 $12,100,000 $12,100,000 $11,600,000
LaMarcus Aldridge $14,100,000 $15,200,000
Serge Ibaka $12,250,000 $12,250,000 $12,250,000 $12,250,000
David Lee $13,878,000 $15,012,000 $15,493,680
DeAndre Jordan $10,986,550 $11,440,123
Carl Landry $6,750,000 $6,750,000 $6,750,000 $6,750,000
Deandre Jordan gets 11m per year for doing nothing but dunk and people think Favors is overpaid? Laughable. 10 M per for a big is the going rate if they can barely play one end at all. This is a decent contract for both sides.
.
If Hayward gets more than 10 M per I'll be really disappointed. I like Hayward but I don't want him to be the next Rudy Gay, AK, or Allan Houston. Don't overpay for wing players you will usually regret it. Unless they are already a superstar. Hayward is not nor is likely to be a superstar in the NBA. Good player yes, elite? Doubt it.

Hayward is already better then those players mentioned. Don't lump him in with them.

agree

I can't think of a single reason for either the Jazz or Favors to take a descending contract outside the incentive clause which would be progressive. Getting his money up front is beneficial for him, and it's beneficial for the Jazz with their current salary structure.

Spot on. Will give us financial flexibility down the road when we need it. And more dough in DFav bank account sooner. Both parties benefit. Makes too much sense to have not happened.

Call on Gordo

At this point you let the market dictate what Hayward will make. The Jazz should just be ready to match any offers made to Hayward. That way everyone comes out looking good.

That is what I'd do. Only risk is that Jazz might get gamed by the Blazers (or other team) who could offer him something above market to screw the Jazz financially (Mathews, Milsap). Flip side is knowing that Jazz are very likely to match, some teams may not bother tying up their attention and resources (offer over a time period) on him and we pick him up on the cheap. (why would someone bother offering $9MM a year when the Jazz will surely match?). Pretty complex game theory going on, I bet Gordo's agent is playing with these scenarios as well.

That said, there are 2 reasons for the Jazz to extend now: (1) allows Jazz to shape the contract to their advantage (front-end load) and signals team's commitment to him as face of the franchise.

If I'm betting on what the Jazz will do: $44MM, 4 years, front-end loaded, with incentives.

Hilarious McGee contract inflate the price of some big men's contracts in the league. Jordan was one of the lucky guys.

You've been walking around in the wilderness for far too long. Good to see you've come around.

It's great to read stuff like this:

Favors, who said he was bothered by trade rumors during his rookie season in New Jersey, has made it clear he enjoys Salt Lake City and called the deal "a dream come true" and a "big relief."

"The main thing I like about Salt Lake City, man, it’s peaceful," he said. "It’s not loud. There’s not a lot of stuff going on. It’s peaceful. You go home and get a peace of mind. That’s the main thing I like. That’s why I bought a house out here, because I hope to make this my home. I hope to retire here."

@ESPNSteinLine: Jazz won't go any farther publicly than acknowledging talks ongoing but I'm told deal -- if completed -- will be richer than Favors' deal
