Favors got extended

I'll be surprised if it's not a contract with raises.

Surprised enough to bet on it?

I can't think of a single reason for either the Jazz or Favors to take a descending contract outside the incentive clause which would be progressive. Getting his money up front is beneficial for him, and it's beneficial for the Jazz with their current salary structure.

Bet?

Sounded like Favors really didn't want to go to a different team and liked it here in Utah. Also I think almost every other team would have paid him the same amount to get him. I think we saved some money here.

That's not what I'M talking about. Shots challenged by Sanders close to the basket have the lowest ratio to result in points ;) Favors is not in the same category yet.
I feel the Jazz got kinda raped by the early extension. Early extension means financial security for the player. The Jazz didn't get a discount here. 3rd year extensions are either financial trade offs or it's a franchise player who you want to stay happy at any cost.
But since Favors views himself as PF I compare him to Taj Gibson. Taj is also a better defender at this point. Derrick is younger with more upside. Offensively they are similar in efficiency IMO at this point. Taj got 4 yrs $33M. If I factor in expected development for Favors I'd say an early extension at $42M would have been a fair price. Now he has the benjamins incoming and can pull a Tyrus Thomas or get hurt. That's why I think that's a horrible contract. Didn't the Jazz hire a former agent to be assistant GM?

It won't be popular but there is a lot of merit to what you're saying. Noah is getting $12/per. He is my baseline comp for Favors.

Taj isn't a fair comp. He doesn't have the same body or upside.

Seems like a reasonable amount to me... as long as Favors develops some sort of offensive game. It's right in line what I expected, although I had feared Favors' agent would have an inflated view of his worth and try to hold out for a higher amount.

Only 4M more than Larry Sanders and his offense is far less than Favors minimal offense!!!

Sanders averaged just under 10/10/3 last season in 27 mins. I have no doubt Derrick can do the same, although he'll be sharing the glass with Kanter. Only concern is keeping out of foul trouble. I knew - and predicted - he'd get a contract around the $11-13M range. Capable Bigs ALWAYS earn at a premium. KOC and Lindsey are both experienced GM's. I trust they had a pretty good idea what he might get as a RFA. Better to build the goodwill now by locking him up. Now it's time for Gordon to sign a deal. I predict he'll get a bit more due to his offensive skills.

Agree. Favors is more than capable of - and will - slide over to the 5 when Kanter sits. Taj cannot defend the 5. He's also not a very good rebounder. I agree with using Sanders or Noah as comps. Sanders took a huge leap forward last season when he started getting PT. I think Derrick will do the same. Favors no doubt impressed the Jazz with his request to work with Malone - remember, it was reported Derrick approached the coaching staff about contacting Karl. He's also been very flattering with what he's said about wanting to stay with the Jazz. Kudos to the organization for rewarding his loyalty and commitment. Could the Jazz have saved $1M/per? Perhaps. Could someone have stepped in and offered $14/per if he has a breakout season? There's always that risk. Jazz have offended some players by letting them "shop the market" to gauge their value. Far better feelings between Favors and management/ownership than what happened with the Millsap/Portland situation.

So what is he making now. $7.5 approximately. With this deal he is going to make $12 million, man life is good in the NBA. This is why I have no sympathy for NBA owners. I am glad Favors signed a new deal but I would have tried to get him for less. I know maybe they did but it seems like a big raise for not doing very much.

I hope the Jazz know what they are doing because you can draft all the talent in the world and screw it up by overpaying guys like they did with AK and Ostertag. It is only a great deal if Favors gets his act together on the offensive end. Unfortunately it puts Kanter in great position if he outplays Favors. Another concern is now Hayward is going to want Paul George money. So far Hayward has played better than Favors so his agent might just say the bidding starts at $49m.

Good job. Jazz had to make this deal - they couldn't risk getting handcuffed with a ridiculous RFA offer.

And even it doesn't work out this is a trade-able contract.

If the Jazz front loaded the contract then I feel better about the deal because they can go a year or two with bigger contracts because they have the cap space with the GS three contracts expiring. I still worry about overpaying guys and then losing out on other Jazz players.

lol he is not overpaid but if i was the gm i wouldn't give gim 49m he is paid more than stephen curry and jrue holiday

LARRY SANDERS! is clearly better than favors even he played alongside with jennings and ellis.

Bigs are more rare and worth more unless the Guard is a superstar, Hayward is not. Favors is the anchor of our defense and this is a decent deal for him. Hayward is not going to get an offer starting at 49M nor should he.

Jazz can afford to make a mistake with Favors, Hayward or Kanter. The deals are much shorter, and they don't have the same cap/tax concerns. AK was a MAX deal; contracts for Hayward and Favors are/will be much less. Besides, these deals will expire by the time the 2014 draft picks need to be re-signed. And I think we've already seen the Jazz have - at best - a decent PG in Trey, but not a superstar. Don't need to set aside MAX $ for Burke.

I was wrong...sort of. Lindsay has more loyalty to Favors than I thought.

Good for Favors and good for the Jazz.

Lol! 49 million?

Jeez. And to think, jazzfanz for years called real starting big men who could actually score (Boozer and Memo) overpaid.

Favors fouls way too much and has yet to develop a single offensive move. I wouldn't have extended him quite yet. I don't know if he can even play more than 25 mins per game due to his foul trouble and offensive liability. People act as if he's Karl Malone. In reality, if he could just be Larry sanders, bird man, or hell, Bogur (post elbow injury) that would be a significant step for him.

If favors can bet himself 49 million just imagine what Hayward and kanter will. Those guys can actually score too.
