What's new

Following potential 2014 draftees

i've seen a little, couldn't really tell his game yet. i'll be watching him a lot down the road

I'd recommend watching him. Seems like he'd be in the area where the Jazz may pick. His athleticism is elite, but it's hard to gauge him if Indiana doesn't give him the ball

IMHO I think the Jazz are at league average or above league average at every position with the young guys but one, and that is the small forward position which I think should be our main focus in this draft and if we are drafting top 3 the two small forwards we obviously look at there are Parker or Wiggins. If we land in the 7-10 range then I like the small forwards in this order from that position Young because of his scoring potential and his athleticism to stay in front of his man on the defensive side, Gordon and Hood are a toss up for me, Gordon reminds me of a power forward trying to play the small forward position kind of like another lottery pick that came out of the same school in Derrick Williams, Gordon is a mix of Derrick Williams and Blake Griffin because of his athleticism and dunking ability but can't shoot a lick from the free throw line. This is why I would lean more towards Hood.

Gordon is a PF. I have never seen a guy really increase his mobility significantly after age 18 in a way that he could suddenly defend new positions. I wouldn't compare him to either Williams or Griffin. None plays defense, Gordon does.

I guess you have to take him at a certain point, but derrick williams has soured me on gordon and I have not even seen gordon play yet.

Is the derrick williams comp something to really worry about or is that a bad comp

It's bad. Josh Smith with more offensive potential and BBIQ is more accurate.

Draft another player who can't accept his true position? Does this team need another power forward? Listen I get the BPA talk but doesn't that only apply when you know you are getting a franchise changing type player? My question is to you if we are draft Aaron Gordon is he better than Derrick Favors or Enes Kanter?

Gordon accepts his position. If his coach wants him to play PG he'll bring the ball...Team first. That's his mentality. You can see it on the court. Gordon is better than both Favors and Kanter. He's at least more talented and works/improves like crazy.

the thing with Gordon is if you draft him then you look trade trade okur for either a stretch 4 or 5. then Gordon posts up 3s where he would dominate.

I like the idea of signing Spencer Hawes for 7-8 annually. Then you don't have to worry if Kanter can finally understand basketball.

I would take all comps with a grain of salt, obvi. You could compare him to Griffin just as easily as you could Derrick Williams.

He's a guy I don't think anyone has totally figured out (more so than with your average prospect).

His defensive ceiling is J Smove. Offensively he does what Griffin does in transition, in the halfcourt he'll need time to figure out timings on the pick and roll and stuff. He's also trying out faceup and straight line drives.

Vonleh is a bit of a tweener height-wise, but I think he's athletic enough to play either the three or four depending on how his skills develop

His ginormous wingspan makes up for being 6'10 in shoes.

Height w/ Shoes: 6'9.75
Weight: 242
Reach: 8'10
Wingspan: 7'4

Him not getting the ball in Indiana's offense probably means that you don't want him to touch the ball unless within 3 feet of the hoop. He's too raw to enter the top discussion. Safer picks with similar ceilings available.

45% from the free throw line, that scares me and especially if he thinks he is a small forward in a power forward body, puts up nice numbers, can jump out of the gym, and highlight reel dunks. What this team needs is a deadly shooter and a man that can play decent defense, Aaron Gordon's offensive game specifically his outside shooting is borderline pathetic. I don't know how he shoots 38.9% from three maybe because he barely shoots one per game. What this team needs is someone who can hit multiple threes and jump shots and hit his free throws when called upon.

Stop hating. Gordin is a decent shooter, but not the answer by any means. I agree this team needs a shooter(s). That's why we go after shooters hard with the GSW pick(Doug McDermott or CJ Wilcox come to mind).

Aaron will be a better overall player than Gordon Hayward. Book it. It's an upgrade that will make the team better, and cost much less.
We add a shooter or go after someone in FA. Not our dream scenario by any means, but a team that will still be fun to watch next year, and
upgraded enough to make things interesting.

This post is a nice silver lining post and made me warm and fuzzy.
Thanks rev, happy new year

I loved the way he hit the glass in the absence of Randle when they needed rebounding in that Louisville game, but he was also 5-17 FGs. On the season he's at 38% FGs and 34% 3pt - both are CJ Miles type numbers. 34% from the college three is not good. On the season he's also getting just 4 rebs - not terrible, but not good either for a guy playing 31 mpg and most of his minutes at SF. I'm not sure what to make of Young yet either - these guys are all so young - but I would like to see him be a lot less selfish being surrounded by talented teammates like he has.

One more thing in defense of Young.. he's doing what Calipari is asking him to do.
Cal isn't necessarily playing to win as much as prepare the youngest team in history for March, most mentally.

i liked Vonleh coming into the draft wondered if he could play the 3 now i think he is a solid 4.

This.

Both Vonleh and Gordon are PF's... it's not really debated with much credibility other than the, "let's see how their skills develop" coverup stuff.

derrick williams was a classic tweener - 6ft 7 1/4 barefoot. 34.5 vertical was ok. blake was measured at 6ft 8 1/2 barefoot. his combine hops were low, but based on his dunks, he probably has 38 inch vert.

aaron gordon may just be a decent 3rd option in the future, but i think he got the size down for sure. he can easily gain 25lb within first 2 years in nba and will actually improve his overall athleticism. i would be highly surprised if he gets measured 6ft 7 1/4 like williams. that would be disappointing and i wouldn't want him if he is not even full 6ft 8.
The NBA lists height with shoes on for all players (effectively). Comparing prospects shoes off measurements with NBA players shoes on measurements is pretty meaningless.

Think he (Vonleh) can defend NBA 3's? He looks like he may be light enough on his feet to do that

I know I'm not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I've been right before about not wanting "Shabazz" solely because I just straight up don't like his name (Cy would remember this - he neg'd me for it).

I'm going on record now as saying that this year the guy I want no part in because of his name is "Vonleh". Rhymes too much with "Volley" in "Volleyball" and I just can't have guys on my team thinking about playing another sport every time they see his name at the back of the jersey/singlet.

It doesn't??? How would you pronounce it???

I'm serious though, you've gotta check out my track record on this - I was spot on with not liking "Shabazz". Wished Cy was here to verify it. PKM - may be you can text message Cy for me?
