This is really a misconception. If we don't have decent perimeter defenders, teams don't need to get into the paint. They just shoot from outside. Or Rudy leaves his man to cover and the ball is dished to the opposing center for an easy basket. There were plenty of times Rudy was posterized last year.
But why do we need to have offense and no defense or vice-versa? The term of the day is "3 and D." Is there a player like McBuckets in the draft? You don't take him. Is there a player like Carroll? You take him. Utah has the luxury of bringing any player along slowly. He doesn't need to start or even play major minutes this season. Take a player with a good stroke who shows willingness to play balls out on defense. Or take a good defender who is showing signs of improving on offense. I trust Quin and DL to evaluate the best prospect in terms of both what he has to offer now and how they think he will develop.
Yeah, I stand by what I said. Guarding the perimeter is easier when those players can concentrate on guarding against outside shots and don't have to worry so much about their players getting by them. Add to that we already have 2 starters that limit us offensively, we don't need more defensive specialists that struggle offensively. Those players can be found rather easily, and we already have one in Lilsap. Utah needs better shooting, not more defensive specialists. If they can find a 2-way player, even better, but if we're choosing between a defensive specialist and a shooter, the decision should be a no-brainer.
