Following potential 2015 draftees

What changed your mind?

I don't think I gave him much of a chance at first tbh. Part of that is because I wasn't too interested in drafting a big when we already had Gobert, Favors, Kanter, and Booker. After the Kanter trade, I decided to abandon any preconceived notions I had concerning Looney and look at him with an unbiased eye. When I did that, I saw: elite length, good lateral quickness (that when combined with his outstanding length, gives him the potential to guard SFs; even DX thinks he will be able to), potential as a floor spacer (42% from 3 on 52 attempts, which is a noticeably bigger sample size than that of Vonleh, Aaron Gordon, Portis, etc.), decent ball handling for someone his size, good intangibles and BBIQ (a positive A/TO ratio bodes well for him).

I think the goal of this team should be to maintain our current level of elite defense while adding improved perimeter shooting to space the floor; Looney offers both potential as a versatile defender and floor spreader, while also showing promising enough IQ as a teenager to learn the nuances of Quin's system.

That's all without taking into account advanced analytics. Every method seems to peg Looney as a stud. I view analytics as a tool to help us see things that we may not see on first glance with the naked eye. These stats are not omniscient, but they can be a great aid in breaking away from the pre-established paradigms and point out potential in a player that we may not have originally seen. Analyitics seemed to point out that maybe there was more to Looney and he was deserving of revisiting.

tl;dr

Looney has long arms and a cool name.

I can totally see where spycam is coming from, but I just have a tough time getting psyched about Kevon Looney. IDK.

So any guesses who the Gobert of this draft will be? I have been watching some film and reading and such and I kind of like Jerian Grant. Good pedigree. And watching him, he certainly plays smooth and in control and seems to be smart about it. He is older but might do us well as a solid backup. I am just thinking that if we can't trade up for an impact guy, then it might make sense to trade down and look for that sleeper and stash some assets.

Candidates to me: Upshaw if he gets it together, Jaiteh(french centers ehh?), Richaun Holmes, and Tokoto (I see a Corey Brewer like player, which is pretty good for second round).

If I had to pick one I'd go with Holmes.

Since we didn't get Paul George, what if we get George de Paula?

Crazy profile, would love to see him working with Quin, think that could work out really well. Probably would mean we'd be looking at some roster moves, as having him/Burke/Exum would be a bit excessive in the young PG category. Not a big fan of the draft and stash route, so if we did get him I'd like to bring him over.

I like him. Was saying yesterday we should trade down for him or Wright. Really want to move on from Trey

I agree with this on both looney and turner. I can see why we'd take those guys instead of Frank but I watched them play so I have my doubts.

If turner is there I wonder if we could take him and trade down with a team that would take looney... Maybe with Boston or Milwaukee and get looney and another pick or player.

I'm starting to think that Justin Anderson wouldn't be a reach at #12

Even if he's good enough to be selected there he won't be picked until roughly ten picks later... If you love him you trade down and collect assets in your way down.

Man did u guys read that Zach Lowe article? Soo good. Its about the post up game and the transition to the playmaking 4. Whos the best passing big man in this draft? Gimme that guy!

I just came here to post this tidbit that I think very much pertains to who the Jazz should look at drafting:

"Going small-against-big risks murder on the glass, but there are ways to minimize that risk, and coaches are getting aggressive at turning an enemy’s lack of post-up skill into more of a liability. The adaptation has been cruelest for stretch power forwards who can’t really do anything but shoot. Coaches have basically played the Matt Bonner/Steve Novak/Mike Scott types off the floor by going small and sticking speedier wings on them — guys who can close fast on 3-pointers and dribble by them on the other end.

“If you’re a stretch 4*today, you’d better have a lightning-quick release,” says Daryl Morey, the Rockets GM.

Guys like Ryan Anderson, Ersan Ilyasova, and Channing Frye are more multidimensional, but they aren’t as lethal as they were two or three years ago, and they can only thrive in specific environments. If they had better post games, they could beat up smaller defenders and force opponents into uncomfortable readjustments. But they can’t — at least not consistently.

A few executives have dumped the term “stretch 4” altogether and replaced it with “playmaking 4” — a term I’m officially stealing right now. Shooting is nice, but it’s not enough anymore as defenses get smarter, faster, and more flexible working within the loosened rules. Spot-up guys have to be able to catch the ball, pump-fake a defender rushing out at them, drive into the lane, and make some sort of play. If they can’t manage that, a possession dies with them.

“In a playoff series, you can figure out shooting,” Karl says. “You just cover Kyle Korver. All that cute stuff they ran for him all year long — they only get that once in a while now. The shooters who have playmaking ability — those are the guys that are really kicking ***.”"

Kaminsky is a stretch 4 that can abuse ppl in the post, pass well, and even dribble the ball up the floor. AKA he is about as much of a playmaking-4 as they come in this draft. Maybe Kevin Looney? Still, no big had the assist numbers that Frank had.

Whoever snags him will be happy. Want him on the Jazz even more after reading that article.

What annoys me about that article as it highlights (again) how ****ing awesome it would have been to have Tomic on this team. Oh well. I suppose Tomic doesn't have the range that Frank does. Tomic would give defenses FITS with his post-play and passing prowess.

After reading this I expect to see Hayward try posting up more and Rudy/Derrick take their passing to another level.

That will be a big step in improving the offense next year.

It seems like the 4 is going to be the lynch pin going forward. Need to shoot, dribble, pass. Have to take advantage of guard and wing switches. Must be able to go to the post, come out to the high post and face up, be smart and pass. I think millsap, dray, and diaw are all very mobile and almost guards really. Theyre soo good and seemed to be undervalued. Looney is sort of that but not quite. Too bad we let paul go! We would have beasted next year.
