Following Potential 2018 Draftees

Yes. I think he does. He was suppose to be in the Jazz's workout tomorrow, then go home to decide if he wanted to withdraw/stay in the draft, but he went home early and skipped the Jazz workout.

There's no reasonable doubt to this. The difference between being guaranteed at top ten and mid-late 20's is huge. He could probably forgo rookie scale and play overseas for plenty of money after another year of college. Jimmer anyone?

So ask yourself, do I take 5 million guaranteed this draft or grow into a top ten pick making an assload more? These kids face tough decisions.

or do I go back and the run the risk of Injury or not improving or more competition for playing time and lose draft position.

LOL You're confusing "fit" with "position". "Fit" plays a huge part in determining BPA when your team is competitive and pushing and drafting late.

Drafting a player who is a poor fit for the team will guarantee that said player will never see the floor. So how much trade value will a player have if he never plays?

Minor correction.

There are so many kids playing basketball every single year all around the world. If my kid was guaranteed to be a top 25 pick in the best league in the world, I'm telling him to go to the draft.

Sure, a 20 year old kid could pass on $7-10 million (last 10 picks) to hopefully get $20-30 million (top half of the draft) the next year, but that 20 year old kid who gets drafted in the last 10 picks is also a year faster to his first big contract if he proves himself. In other words, he could get a big pay day at 24 instead of 25 if he truly feels that he is better than his draft pick (i.e. Gobert).

Also, a decent player who goes to a good team might have a chance to show that he's essential for a contender. It's amazing what good coaching and good teammates can do for development.

Uhh, he isnt going to have any competition for playing time. He is on Maryland, not Duke or Kentucky.

You dont draft for fit. That is terrible strategy, and recipe for suckville.

You know who else is a terrible fit? Anyone who cant play in the NBA.

You draft best player available. Regardless of who you have or who you are as a team. You look for value. Then work it out later with a trade or something. There are only a couple handful of guys who can play and make it in the NBA out of each draft class. That couple of handfuls turns into only a handful the more the draft class ages. So that means a big chunk of each draft class is a waste of time. Go look back at every draft and see for yourself. The further you get away from the current year, the less players you see that worth even drafting.
I agree to an extent. For instance, the Jazz shouldn't be draft a true center though, even if he is BPA, unless it's by some huge margin.

Exactly. We are asking a very young kid and his parents to take this decision when some are tuned to take the conservative route and others are tuned to shoot for the stars. Utah wants players shooting for the stars.

This kid is going through this decision. Most will take the 4 or 5 million and consider it a landfall, but a true competitor would hold out.

A true competitor would forgo entering the most competitive league in favor of going to college? Right....

If he goes back, it's probably because he doesnt feel ready and/or he enjoys being a collegiate athlete.

Some guys just aren’t ready for the spotlight... watche Lydon last year at summer league... on and off the court he looked so overwhelmed.

Part of the reason I like Donte is dude doesn’t seem phased. Totally murdered the national championship game... dudes been getting his bhole licked since he was 15... he’s the true Born Ready!

I'm wondering what Omari Spellman's work-ethic is like. I think that's what is going to make or break him. If he's lazy he's going to be a rich man's Lyles on both ends of the court (as long as he doesn't pig out on food) and if he works super hard he can be like Zach Raldolph (rebound machine, stretches the floor; though Randolph was never much of a shot-blocker or legit three-point shooter - similar body though).

He looks like a big fat dumb baby and I doubt he is as good as Lyles.

Huerter has really impressive tape that’s for sure. And 19 years old? Damn. Hope he comes out. It’s silly to not take guaranteed money to play for free.

I know that he is way out of the Jazz draft range, but I've been watching high school video on Michael Porter Jr. He looked a little stiff in high school. Looks like he was mainly a below the rim athlete which is odd at his size. Was he having back issues in high school too that he maybe wasn't fully aware of at the time? If so his high school performance was even more impressive. I see the surgery was a microdiscectomy. Minimally invasive surgery to clean out a herniated disc. It's an injury with a relatively low rate of reoccurance (about 5%). He definitely has talent but how much? Have we actually ever seen him at 100%? Is it possible this back issue prevented us from seeing his best? He's probably the biggest enigma in this class.

Huerter is one of my top guys so I would be bummed if he went back. Besides the money, a player should look at the organization who may draft him. If he goes back he may end up being on a crappier team or with a bad organization. It is a tough decision but unless you don't feel you are ready, it is a no-brainer to take the money as soon as possible. I don't know what are some examples of guys going back and moving up substantially in the next year's draft?

Spellman is a bull in a china shop, but he could be forceful in the paint and the jumper works well enough. Don't think he's much of a rim protector though.

This sounds well and good but how many guys are guaranteed top 25?

15?

He had 1.5 blocks a game - played decent defense during the tournament. The majority of stretch-4s are below average defenders - I think Spellman can be somewhat decent if he works at it - he's athletic for his size. That's the question for me though - work-ethic.
