Following Potential 2018 Draftees

The problem is they're small. You could go sign any decent free agent 6'2" PG and have two playmakers. Who is going to guard James Harden and Klay Thompson though. Yes they can score on anyone, but holding them to 25 points instead of 35 matters.

DM has size to defend either of those guys and dudes that can create aren’t as easy as just going and signing them off the scrap heap. We have defensive backcourt guys so if we need variance we’d be fine.

I’m also not building for one specific team and one of the best ways to hurt good players... especially harden... is to make them work on the other end. Don’t give them anywhere to hide.

We're the #1 defense in the NBA. Defense is not a problem. Nobody is going to stop great players like Harden or Klay from going off if they get red hot but we're already well equipped to slow them down enough. Look at what Dante did to Harden in round 2. The problem is that when we face the Warriors and Rockets we don't have the necessary ammo to keep up offensively.

Yes, we did do decent containing Harden because we had Exum and O'Neal on him, two 6'6" guys with long arms. That would change if we put a 6'2" guy on him.

You'd put Exum, O'Neale or Crowder on the tougher defensive matchup. Mitchell can guard 6'5" guys too.

I agree that you can't have any defensive weaknesses though. One weak defender will get isolated and attacked.

If by some chance okobo is there and the Jazz don't take him, i don't know if I'll ever recover. And i really like Khyri and Musa- at least one of whom will be there.

I'm still a bit scarred from the Jazz taking a 5'11" chubby spaniard over the 6'2" offensively gifted french PG, 17 years ago or whatever.

Who said we would put a 6'2 guy on him?

Unless you bench one of them in the most important series of the year, Okobo or DM would have to guard Harden heavy minutes. I don't think it would work well. Portland has a similar tiny backcourt and Harden averaged 38 ppg this year on them, Houston going 4-0.

A 6’ 2” French guard taken low in the draft?

Sound like anyone?
He is nothing like Tony Parker. Parker had excellent burst and quickness coupled with incredible touch around the hoop. Okobo is more in the mold of homeless man's Damian Lillard.

I think what you meant to say is we need players who can compete defensively and provide the offensive scoring punch we need. If we trade defensive strength/offensive weakness for offensive strength/defensive weakness we haven't gained anything.

Lillard and McCollum aren’t bad on defense bc of their size, they’re just bad on defense.

Height doesn’t matter. Wingspan does.

DM is 6'3 with a 6'10 wingspan, he's a rock solid 210 pounds and he's gonna be fine defensively. Okobo is 6'2/6'3 with a 6'8 wingspan and has a frame that can add a little weight. The problem the Blazers have is that while Lillard is 6'2 with a near 6'8 wingspan he also has a thin frame and has never been a good defender. McCollum has never been a good defender either and he isn't that long (6'6 wingspan). Portland also doesn't have a good rim protector and we do.

Quin would get creative. He's a really good coach when it comes to matchups. If Okobo has some struggles on defense against the Hardens and Klays of the world but is the offensive player a lot of us think he can be then Quin will find ways to utilize his offensive abilities without sacrificing defense. Maybe he plays Okobo off of the bench only against the second unit of the other team. Maybe he has Okobo guard a spot up shooter while guys like Exum/DM/Rubio/Crowder/Ingles guard those guys.

Okobo is similar to guys like James Harden and D'Angelo Russell. Stop saying dumb stuff like Lillard and George Hill.
