Following Potential 2020 draftees

Jarrell Brantley looks like he could be a Paul Pierce/Joe Johnson-type big wing who plays on the ball if he can hit more of his shots and play off of screens.

I'm not gonna front like im some expert on Jarrell Brantley.. But based on this footage, It's kinda hard for me to imagine him being a "big wing" in the NBA... He looks much, much more like a power forward to me.. I mean if you just look at his legs, those are the legs of a bigman not a wing..

Yeah, I can see that. Here's Joe Johnson playing the 3 for Brooklyn, actually they listed him as a guard. He's pretty stalky, weighs over 240 lbs, and likes to back down too, but Brantley's a big dude for sure. JJ started playing at the 4 when he went to Miami. Obviously, Brantley's not this skilled.

I would agree with this from what I have seen.

Joe Johnson and Paul Pierce were obviously top-10 picks for good reason...

Am sick of seeing shock-value/fear-mongering college basketball recruiting articles targeted directly at the most casual members of fanbases..

It's like the whole message behind the same article i see, over and over, is; "Someone who might give a **** could see this and then possibly we could trick them into caring again"... It just seems their cyclical in nature too, It's like the whole tone of the article is to plant a seed of future concern in the readers head(and nothing more)..

It's like ur listening to a puppet trying to channel what it thinks its master wants it to say... The editors are just as culpable as the writers for letting this **** pass..

I dont really consider that writitng tbh.. at that point your closer to a robot..

I always liked the quote;

"The news job isnt to inform you, it's to sell you"

some of this **** i just aint buying.. doesnt seem real to me..

https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nca...rown-iii-longhorns/1wtu9evc48j7q15z94vf4s0f8p

to write a story like this after the Greg Brown commitment, it's just such a spin job...

I swear writers doing "way too early top-25 preseason rankings" get dumber and more formulaic by the year... they write their articles by looking at a depth chart, making up some values in their mind, like this;

giphy.gif

and then completely ****ing sensationalize the loss of the outgoing seniors.. often downplaying the young talent and camping up how difficult it's gonna be for them --- though this behavior in its most concentrated form manifests itself in a massive over-hype sort of like the Cliff Alexander(Jahlil Okafor to a lesser degree) thing years back.. (Which of course compounds itself into under-hyping things that deserve it..). That very same year with Jah and Cliff Alexander... Ya boi was on here saying Ohio State's 2 man recruiting class(Kieta bates-diop and D'angelo russell) is actually way underrated.. If u actually looked back at the timeframe im speaking on, the things being written about d'angelo russell at that point were absurd... saying he had a loose handle, complete nonsense..

The thing about these articles is there's not even one moment where it's like the writer goes out to a ledge and makes a stand/point. Or if they do, it's that very moment where usually expose themselves as casuals trying to dress up the articles with their writing skillz.

Its worth pointing out too that bookies influence seems to inch closer day by day to the sports media world, with scott van pelt doing his bad beats, and just the lines being read on broadcasts more and more casually...

Can't help but think of the old Lupe Fiasco song "Dumb it down".. seems to be whats going on here.... These writers have no ****ing discernible style either, it's such a failure, the most unique words they put in their articles are literally their names...

and remmember bois lemme qualify myself real quick... I'm a HS dropout sitting here talking about how these articles targeted for college boys are ****ing dumb and predatory.... It shouldnt be so obvious to someone of my lesser education level... I dont think anyways... I guess its once again a matter of other ppl having pitifully low standards compared to mine, my point is tho that ****** reporters/writers pushing this garbage are infact the ones on the frontlines, entry-fragging, lowering the standards...

these writers are "unknowingly" fattening up the sheep to lead them to the slaughterhouse.. lets be real, 99% of em dont even realize it probably cuz their so far down the chain of command they'll write anything to get a few bucks..

Bro's these books dont make their $$$ off people like me, and their well aware of that. I drink their milkshake type ****..... they make them off the suckers these articles are targeted for... I dont type this to puff out my chest, just as a warning....

some of these writers too.. I really wonder how much they make... Some of this feels on par with a 16 year old kid winning 100 bucks in a video game tournament and crowning himself a "professional" because he's PAID...

I think it would be cool if the Jazz could bring in Joe for several days to work with guys like Brantley and Niang. I think it would be really good for them.
No it wouldn't lmao. They are nothing alike. Bring in Booker to help Brantley if you want to instill actual things that will translate to his game. Niang has Ingles, he is fine on the mentor level.

JJ is a methodical scoring surgeon.

Brantley is a bowling ball with blinders. He has 0% chance at ever playing like JJ and being a NBA player. It isnt in his cards.

That's pretty cynical. Brantley can definitely be an NBA player. (lmao yourself)
Did I say he couldn't be a NBA Player? I said he can't play like JJ AND be a NBA player. He has to play more like a Trevor Booker. That's his future NBA role, if he is to make it in the NBA.

Even at the highest peak of what Brantley can be, you are talking more like a lower agility Aaron Gordon, and that is extremely optimistic that he can even reach that level of ball skill.

Based on his GLeague play Brantley needs to cut down his silly turnovers and develop more of a 3 ball. I can see him having similar skills as Adrian Dantley. He had that uncanny ability to score at will with the three foot finger roll or get fouled while trying.

I think he can play a role like Paul Millsap by his next season. Put him on the floor with the regular rotation guys and not a revolving cast of G-leaguers, and I think he can fit right in. Give him 10 - 15 minutes and he'll play hard during that span. He can hit 34% - 36% of his 3PAs, and he's actually better at attacking off the dribble and passing out to shooters than Millsap was during his first few years with the Jazz. He just hasn't shown a consistent motor yet.

He's been cutting down on turnovers and raised his 3pt FG% from 29% to 33% over the last dozen games (meaning he shot ~36% during that span). His stats for the season are now 18.8p / 7.6r / 3.7a / 1.4s with decent shooting percentages (51/33/74). He needs a good summer, but I think he should be ready to be a rotation player by next season.

I’m a little worried his play in the GLeague won’t carry over to the nba. Not sure he’s quick enough and plays too low to the ground. Not an expert though. Any of these points valid?

He plays like Jabari Parker but he isnt as skilled or explosive. He's huge though and has good mobility for his size with random ball skills. He has a lot of potential to be an energy PF with limited point forwardy skills like Trevor Booker.

Trevor Booker could never shoot, wasn't a particularly good finisher at the rim, had very limited ability to handle, and was mostly a straight-line driver. He was the epitome of a backup energy big who would play defense, crash the offensive glass, and bring emotional energy and toughness, but that was about it. His lack of shooting and finishing made him unplayable and pushed him out of the league.

Brantley has the ability to play and create out on the perimeter. He's got some handle, hesitations and crosses, the ability to backdown, and a variety of ways to finish at the rim. He bullies smaller defenders, and he uses his length to score around bigger defenders. He can shoot off the dribble, both from distance and mid-range, and he's even developed a pretty good floater from 8-10 feet. The thing that's most surprising is his ability to fire passes off the dribble with timing and vision.

If you want to compare him to someone, compare him to guys like Paul Millsap, Royce White, Boris Diaw, and even a bit of Paul Pierce. The way he'll earn his way onto the floor is by playing hard on defense and crashing the glass, but he's got a lot of versatility and ways to contribute in Quin's system. If Georges Niang wasn't hitting 43% of his 3s right now, I think Brantley would already be getting some rotation minutes.
