George Hill fires agent - Hires new one before free agency

George Hill, having just completed the final year of a five-year, $40 million deal that he originally signed with the Pacers in 2012, has changed agents prior to becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Hill has hired Matthew Ward, Ward confirmed to VigilantSports.com. This isn’t a new relationship between the two; Ward has served as Hill’s financial advisor for nearly a decade.

Hill was previously represented by veteran agent Bill Neff, who was officially terminated in December (2016), according to National Basketball Players Association records. Hill informed secondary agent Michael Whitaker this month that he, too, had been terminated.

Ward became an NBA-certified agent in January, NBPA records show, and he officially began representing Hill in mid-May.

It's either meaningless or it's good. Hard to say, since it says he fired his agent in December, and then let a secondary agent know he was also fired. I don't know what that means exactly, whether this secondary agent was tied to the guy who got fired in December, and this is just unfinished business, or if this guy had something to do with Hill turning down his extension.

If it's the latter, I'd say it's a good thing, as he's probably not happy with that advice. If he's regretting not taking the extension, that's good news for us, in that he isn't just set on playing for someone like the spurs.

Yeah, this is the part WC left out:

Ward became an NBA-certified agent in January, NBPA records show, and he officially began representing Hill in mid-May.

So it sounds like Hill fired his agent in December in anticipation of his financial advisor becoming certified. As he has been his advisor for a decade, it doesn't sound like Hill is canning someone because of the rejected extension.

Maybe that is why he is firing him? That seemed like a mistake to pass up on Hills behalf.

These guys just give advice. They don't have crystal balls that predict injuries and trades that could change the landscape. They steer them the best they can, and it's obviously not always just about money when a player choses a direction. Anyway, I don't think this is a case of firing someone in connection with the rejected extension, but if it is, I'd say that's good for us.

It seems the old guy was fired in December and his current agent didn't start representing officially him until Mid May. He may have been there unofficially of course.

Yeah he fired his agent and the guy who was his financial adviser started representing him. Now that guy is his main agent. Or at least I think that's how it goes. I saw it explained on twitter.
