Good Article About People Getting Offended

https://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/22/opinion/please-stop-apologizing.html?_r=1

Seems like politics has become a battle of who can get the most offended by the smallest thing.

I'm all for the jist of this article, but coming from a guy like Bill Maher is just rich.

This whole "Let's get offended and force an apology and destroy the person who said it" crap was started and perpetuated by the left. The right got fed up and is fighting back and now here is the left saying "Can't we all just get along"

Excuse me if I don't feel like accepting the olive branch.

And most of that article was a bunch of jabs.
Kind of like "Hey who cares if Rush Limbaugh is a complete racist and says totally unacceptable things all the freakin time....let's not be offending that everyone on the right is a complete douchbag and shouldn't even be allowed to breathe. And as for the few times that a person on the left has said something tiny that may or may not have been a good thing, let's just let the healing begin."

I had a feeling someone was going to complain about the author. I didn't even look at it until I finished. Maher is annoying, but like you said, the point of the article is still true.

tl;dnr but I'm sure it was Bushes fault and the comments have no place in public discourse.

I'm now sticking my fingers in my ears screaming "lalala I can't hear you closed minded right wingers" like a good liberal parrot would.

Is there any redeming values of liberalism? Really, is there?

Well, it's easy to see where the impulse arose for politicians to become easily offended. If you can paint yourself as morally outraged over insignificant things, QED you must be a morally upright and sensitive person. As far as what it actually accomplishes, of course, it's basically just political masturbation -- "Look at me! I'm so PC for being outraged at this, those guys over there are insensitive cretins! Rah rah rah!" And since taking a stand and making an actual difference on things that actually matter is harder, and often has less predictable results so far as present popularity is concerned, politicians will continue to shamelessly get themselves off all over the media.

I didn't know it was Maher until the end, but while I was reading it, I was rolling my eyes like bowling balls.

But any liberal whining about this is like Chris Paul complaining about all the flopping in the NBA.

Agreed, it would have been a better article with some left side overreactions. Still the point stands and is valid.

This is true of 90% of any political figure or political reporter/commentator.

Just look at the recent Rush Limbaugh crap.

The left goes crazy and points out that so many of Rush's sponsors have left him. Reality was that there weren't that many, and for each one that left, many more were happy to take their place.
But here is where it gets interesting: THere is now proof that Media Matters and other lefties have been doing a coordinated effort to send fake outrage to other Rush sponsors to get them to think there is this groundswell of rage against Rush.
Totally manufactured.
Now why would they do this? Because there is no outrage. Nobody gives a damn if Rush called a slut a slut. But when the left wants something bad enough, reality doesn't mean a thing.

The ACTUAL reality is that the sponsors that did actually pull their ads have suffered for it.

well, it's a fantasy. The left isn't going to stop getting offended and the right is fed up enough, they are going to play the game too, if only to shine a light on the hypocracy.

I think directly calling someone a slut is different than what the article is talking about. That is a direct insult to somebody.

Can you prove that?

This is important to point about because it's not just people whining, it's people out there actively picking up anything they can twist to fit their definition of offensive and trying to chill free speech in the process and create active media distractions as their occupation. Those are the people we need to start calling out more because a lot of the whining is rooted from their faux outrage and then picked up by mainstream media and politicians and go wildfire from there. I'm tried of seeing this **** constantly on news sites when I make my daily news run.

The thing is. I don't think most people are really offended. They are using fake outrage as a tool.

If we want to use the flopping analogy again...how do you stop players from flopping? Don't call fouls when they flop.
How do you stop all the fake offending? Don't reward them for it.

Is it really an insult to call someone what they are?

Pure conjecture on your part as you do not know her.

As for the comment about people not really caring. I think that people generally are outraged. They are outraged at all the fake BS the left and right are doing and saying.

.

Well, I can infer some things.

She said herself that she wants free contraception so that she can have all the sex she wants. She isn't married. Having multiple partners. That's a slut.

It also turns out that she is 30 years old and is not just a student, but a full time political activist who only enrolled at Georgetown so that she can cause problems and try to force a liberal agenda onto the university.
Plus, her whole appearance before congress was not actually before congress. She was handpicked by Pelosi to pose as a concerned student, but since Pelosi didn't follow procedure and tried to sneak her in, she was refused and all that she said was actually at a press conference that Pelosi tried to pass off as a speach before congress.
So that would make her a political slut.
