Hantlers explains why things are the way they are on reservations

No, it's the fellow black students, of course. I was probably insufficiently clear on that, but when I referred to the contemporaries who believe they will never get a fair chance, I did indeed mean the black kids; usually the white kids believe they will get some sort of chance. The white kids use terms to indicate the black kids don't belong, but "sell-out" is not usually among them.

OK, that is better. So part of what is holding down minorities is their own racially charged misonceptions. Interesting.

Are there white kids that would make a minority feel less welcome in their cliche? Absolutely and they should be exposed as the racist bigots they are. But I deny this notion that it is as widespread and ingrained as you assert. That works with those calling a well performing minority a "sell out". Good on that kid for rising above the additional challenges they face.

I found this interesting. Who do you think is contributing to this? Are white people calling that person a sell out? Or are members of that individuals own race calling them a sell out? If so, why?

Remember the Fab Five calling Grant Hill an Uncle Tom because he wasn't "ghetto" enough .... I think that type of thing is pretty common in AA culture. i think its more likely jealousy, but there seems to be almost a badge of honor to being a dumb *** gangster rather than a intelligent successful person.

Their own evaluations, which are certainly racially charged, but generally not misconceptions.

Feel free to deny it. On the one hand, study after study shows that, even by people who hold no racial malice, the efforts/abilities/aptitudes/work of black people is downgraded/diminished/more harshly evaluated/ignored when compared to identical output from white people. On the other hand, we have the denial of a lot of white people who haven't conducted these formal studies. I'll believe the studies.

That works with those calling a well performing minority a "sell out". Good on that kid for rising above the additional challenges they face.

'Good for the truly committed and brilliant, they get to be recognized as diligent and above average if they are black. Too bad for those of average dedication and ability, they need to perform above average if they want to be treated as average.' I can't support that line of thinking.

Do go on. How are intelligent gangsters regarded? Wealthy gangsters? "Dumb ***" successful people?

Ahh..there it is. Knew it couldn't stay hidden for long.

Basically I am white and any ideas I may have on race and minorities are racist misconceptions. However those held by any member of any minority are not misconceptions. They are informed decisions based on my racism.

You seem to be confusing things. I have never once denied that there are racisms and prejudices and that overall minorities have a harder time of things. Not once. What you seem to confuse is that this somehow indicates that all whites are racist and that all minorities are informed on white racism and not racist Triangle Man is right. You beat around the bush a heck of a lot and hedge your words and phrasing but it is still clear what you are saying.

Heck let's just call it whitism. That'll make you happy.

The images in my head are people. You are the one that wants them all to be minorities.

So, when you hear a singular word, the first image that pops into your mind is a crowd of people? What an interesting brain you have (unless you are kidding yourself).

Wow, that's remarkably self-centered. You think other people read your mind, or care what you think?

Basically I am white and any ideas I may have on race and minorities are based on my experience, where I benefit or do not get harmed from the racism in society. However those held by any member of any minority are not misconceptions. They are informed decisions based on the harm they suffer of the benefits they do not receive.

Fixed.

It is often based on who I happen to be talking to at the moment actually. So the generic "people" seems apropriate.

The fact that it is always black people that pop into yours and your misconception that that is always how it must be is what I find interesting.

hahahaha. Don't be mad that I called you down from your soap box to borrow it for a minute. You are the jazzfanz king of this. Multiple people have told you this.

Because of the portrayal in the major media, the images around "welfare" are racially charged.

You would have to prove that. Opinion has no place with the assertions you are making.

And even then, you would have to prove that the word welfare=image of poor black person (have to gender identify in that case, since you're being specific and all, which makes me wonder why you're not chirping about welfare being sexually charged against women or men) equates to complaining about welfare being racially charged or motivated, to which the correlation doesn't immediately exist.

Example. The term "professional basketball player" might bring up an image of a tall, black man. Firstly, that doesn't mean 100% of professional basketball players are tall, black men. Secondly, complaining about professional basketball players, say they're selfish ball hogs in comparison to their amateur equivalents, does not imply that black people are selfish ball hogs. That correlation does NOT exist unless you can prove that, and providing mass media as an explanation with no sourcing provides zero conclusiveness, just full speculation, which is pretty useless to explain the assertion you're making.

I don't have much to contribute to this thread except that when I hear the word 'welfare,' racial minorities are not the image that comes to mind. A different, equally unfair vision comes to my mind, but not of minorities. Perhaps this comes from my time living in rural Ohio, rural Missouri, or small-town Texas. In any case, I was curious if the assertion was true. I wasn't sure how to give this a quick test, but figured I'd see what kind of representation google images gave me. I'll let anyone interpret as they will, of there's any interpreting to be done. Feel free to submit anymore search phrases that may be deemed appropriate:

The interesting picture I saw in those was this one:

Not linking the page since it has a bad word in the article. Can extrapolate some things, but still not to the overreaching point that's trying to be made in this thread so far.

Really? When you read/hear "welfare recipient", the first image in your brain has blue skin? Purple? Gray?

Honestly the first image that came in to my head when I read this sentence was a large white woman and her white husband with about 6 kids, all in line at a Walmart while she separated out the beer and other alcohol from the food and paid for the regular food with her foodstamp card and the alcohol with cash, while all of her kids played on iphones or other smartphones with obvious data connections. As we more or less followed them to the parking lot and noted they were riding in a relatively new (at the time) Excursion. That was the first image that came to mind.
