So, having been really big into movies in the 90s but not keeping up much with movies after that, I'm pretty good on my 80s/90s movie knowledge and trivia. That said, I'd never seen St. Elmo's Fire, and finally got around to watching the first third of it last night. This song popped up in the background, which I immediately recognized:

Having heard this many times, I couldn't put my finger on which other movies I've heard this in, so upon searching, I found out that this is literally titled "Love theme from St. Elmo's Fire," which doesn't make much sense, as you probably wouldn't be putting a tune called that into other movies. When I google it, I don't find much info other than the artist and no references to pop culture besides the obvious. Was this commercially released? Why do I know all the notes of this song but it's so scant on info of where I've heard it?

First comment:
On October 5, 1985, David Foster performed "Love Theme from St. Elmos' Fire" on the American syndicated musical television program 'Solid Gold'...
At the time the song was at #39 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, six weeks later it would peak at #15 {for 1 week} and it spent 22 weeks on the Top 100...
In December of 1985 it reached #7 {for 1 week} on the Canadian RPM Singles chart...

I occasionally hear it on local oldies stations.

It made the top 40 charts, if you were listening to top 40 music in 1985 like I was. I've never seen the movie but can sing along with the entire song.

I was born in '85.

Yeah, it was a big hit, but it also not that dissimilar from a bunch of other instrumental tracks from that same timeframe.
