What's new

Hoopsworld ranks the Utah Jazz as the No.3 team in the Northwest division

I must be missing something. How was Harris a nightmare for us? He played 17 games, producing just a little under his average in all statistical categories. I don't recall him being a problem on the floor, but he was a new player on a directionless team. I thought he easily met the low expectations set for him.

Good post. The team was more successful with Harris as the starter as the season ended. I think he's a decent stop gap as long as he's willing to learn and run the system Corbin puts in. Our biggest problem right now is no starting quality SF. Millsap is not a starting quality SF and CJ is the only other option and he's not a starting caliber wing either. I am all for trading a big for a quality wing and bolstering that spot in next years draft.

Whatever we do, I will be astounded if we even compete for the playoffs into February. I expect us to have a lot of growing pains early and improve as the season progresses. With our young players beginning to get more playing time and experience as the season goes along. I will be very dissapointed if 2 of these players are not starting by the end with at least 3 seeing a significant role in the rotation. Those being:Favors, Hayward, Burks, Evans and Kanter.

Speaking of those 5 players could they possibly be a decent lineup in the future?

PG Burks
SG Hayward
SF Evans
PF Favors
C Kanter

Burks may have the skills to play as a taller PG in some situations and with Hayward on the floor he would not be the only ball handler.

Color me underwhelmed with 5.4 apg and 2.88 turnovers, not even a 2:1 ratio. I know he was coming onto a new team but he's a vet and one surrounded by some decent talent in Jefferson and Millsap and those numbers and his performances as I recall them (on 41.3% from the floor) didn't do much for me other than confirm the fact that we still need a point guard of the future.

#'s are not everything. However I agree he's not to be our PG of the future. But the team won more when he was on the floor than when he was hurt after the trade. So even though the #'s look bad he did help the team win.

I'm in the minority, I understand, but throw me into the small group that thinks Harris will have a very solid next couple years (if he's here). I don't think he's the future, but I'm far from down on him. Would have loved to have figured out how to add Knight to this draft and give him a couple years to take over the spot.

I completely agree with this. I thought the more Harris was on the court at the end of the season the better the team played. I think with a training camp camp and time to mesh with the team he becomes a good player for us.

Of course now it looks like there might not be a training camp and we might be starting right were we left of at the end of the year. Of course I liked were we left off the last 3 games so it might not be all that bad.

If the Jazz run a two-guard set, Harris could be a good fit. He just needs some of the pressure taken off of him.

The main problem last year both before and after the trade was that we just lost too much wing talent, so the offensive balance just fell apart. At the same time, Millsap starting at the PF was a let down on the boards. With Favors, and Hayward/Burks, plus Kanter coming off the bench, the Jazz should have enough talent to win games, if Corbin can do a good coaching job.

I'm surprised Hoopsworld has the Jazz rated ahead of the Nuggets, but I guess they're expecting the Nuggets to lose Nene.

Good post. Once again, a penetrating guard gets shackled by a non-performing perimeter. Who did we have that was keeping the floor spread? I feel you MUST have at least two 'true' 3pt threats in order to run effective offensive schemes .. especially considering our front line should be able to handle just about anyone one-on-one.

Why CAN'T Harris be our PG of the future? Didn't a 40 year old Jason Kidd just win a Championship? Are we expecting an All-Star PG to fall from the sky in the next couple years? I think Harris can evolve his game to the point where he is more of a facilitator than scorer. I think it will be beneficial to have a veteran floor general in 3 years with so many 20-25 year-olds on the team. Plus with play-makers Hayward and Burks potentially taking some of the assist load off of Harris, 5-6 per game would be just fine. I don't want a starting line-up of 23 year-olds. Just look at Minnesota's starting line-up to get a taste of that. Pretty solid at every position but they win 20 games every year.

I would have been persuaded by your very well written, articulate, and persuasive argument .. but you lacked the minimum number of excalamation points and bold lettering. *sigh, so close*

We can't get too far ahead of ourselves. It looks like our wing rotation will be Hayward/CJ/Bell/Burks but we might bring in a new free agent.

You're setting some very lofty things by comparing one good PG to a first-ballot HOFer. How many other 40 year old PGs that can't hit an open shot (Kidd can now, that's another important difference. Harris could learn [like Kidd did], but the odds say it doesn't happen) have won a championship as a starter?

I for one think Harris could definitely fit well in this team. Do you guys not remember how many clutch 3s he hit in the last 10-15 games of the season??? We lost a lot of close games near the end (Celitcs, Nuggets etc) of the season and Im surprised a lot of you forgot how often Harris kept us in those games with his 3point shots in the last 2 minutes of the game

clutch 3s? u mean when the game was over and his 3 pointer was just a nonsense long range throw to the rim?
We can find other guys to hit clutch 3s but harris first should learn how to handle the ball under pressure, i saw him turning the ball over many times in last 4-5 mins of the games.
And yes ure right he kept us in the game but unfortunately he can win no game with those 3s

a) the second and last sentence of your post completely contradict eachother; please look back at some highlight reels from last season if you do not know what I speak of.
b) Given that the Jazz offense is extremely system-based, and there isnt a lot of room for improvisation and not a lot of focus on isos it is simply unfair to sign a PG after the allstar break and expect him to know the system extremely well and turn it over at a very low rate while trying to facilitate your teammates using this newly-learned system. In other words, give the guy a break, see if he turns it over nearly as much in a scenario where he has ample time to mesh with the team.
c) Who else on our team can hit a clutch 3? And its hard to win games when your 2/3 starting wing combination is one of the most offensively inept duos in the NBA, even if you hit clutch threes. Lest we forget AK missing a layup against Denver...

Note the clutch three in the defenders face, and andrei's epic fail.
