What's new

How did Exum look last night?

The main reason I haven't lost hope in him is because the Jazz haven't. Houdini can't get off the bench, even when we could use his skill set. They are still bringing Dante along, giving him more minutes, and coaching him up. And, to be objective, he is rewarding the patience. Look at the impact he had on this game when he came in. We were playing like c*** and were down by 6. He had a piece of every play that put us up by 5. Small sample though it is, it is something. The bigger evidence is that they put him in and are still trying to develop his skill set.

He is not spida, and maybe we have been spoiled by learning curve that kid has. With all the set backs Dante has had, if the coaches are still hopeful, I will be too. That said, the comparison Q used was Neto, not Mitchell, when he said to not expect too much, too soon.

Good post and good points

That was totally nuts. Had to watch it a few times and it looked like it was sped up. Crazy burst. As I said, he might be the fastest player in the NBA.

It’s deceptive though because it doesn’t look like he’s sprinting ever.

Like when I sprint you can tell that is as fast as I can go... he looks like he’s gliding and has another gear (I don’t think he does... just looks like it).

His finishing looks so much better and he actually has showed some decent touch. I don’t think he’s a Roberson level non-shooter. Biggest thing for improvement is still just his ball handling... still kinda sloppy imo.

If Dante can consistently play like he did against the Warriors for us the rest of this season than we have a completely upgraded bench team. That's a dangerous addition to our playoff hopes and I'm not even a huge fan of the guy.

It's nice to see that he is getting more comfortable out there and we have the rest of the regular season to get him tuned up and dialed in.

Most importantly we have another wrench to throw at Dame and McCollum. Four strong defensive guards capable of different looks is something that not a lot of teams have.

I like his decisive passes, seems like he saw play developing before it happen, that is good skill.... I am not sure I will ever get used to his ballet layups. Just looks awkward and feminine to me, just so weird. Oh well, does not need to be pretty as long as it goes in.
So your only problem with him and the reason you dislike him so much is you think his movement looks feminine?

I have no idea why that matters.

I don't dislike him ( His lack of mid range game and ugly jumper has nothing to do with how he moves BTW). I just think he was way overrated before draft and came with too many unreasonable expectations. Had he been drafted at 20-30 range nobody here would complain about him at all. Now he has higher measuring stick as 5th pick and he is not living up to those expectations so far.

What he needs to add is some breaks. He needs to learn to blow by his guy and then get in position and slow down. He misses most his layups because he is going full speed at the rim. It's hard to finish like that. Burks, Royce and even Mitchell have that problem as well at times. Mitchell is learning and doesn't always do it. Burks never learned. I have no idea about Royce.

Fair enough.

I think the biggest issue is he was a huge project player with upside. Fans expect a player picked high to come in and play like Mitchell but that almost never happens. Even more so with Exum who was always supposed to be a years long project and got even more delayed with 2 seasons of injuries. His ceiling is high but who knows if he will get there or even close. It's just a guessing game.

A 5th pick in a very weak overall draft class. But with players still on the board, outside of Nurkic, I still believe Exum has more upside than any player taken after him in the draft.

That's very optimistic. I think it is obvious Saric, Smart, LaVine, Bogdanovic, Jokic and Randle are much better now and I do not see Exum overtaking neither of them in the future. Payton is as well better than Exum now but if he does not develop outside shot Exum may surpass him. Dinwiddie is another one where Exum may have a chance at getting better.

Bogdanovic is pretty good, forgot about him being in that draft class. Payton's might be good if his hair didn't do such a good job defending him.

Exum's upside will largely be derived on his health. If he keeps getting hurt then it is a pick down the drain. If his injuries were just flukes, and he can get constant playing time, he has shown some amazing ability on the court. I wouldn't say I'm very optimistic. He still has a lot to improve, but I have already seen a huge jump since he joined the league. I just see the upside there, and I think he is a worth gamble based on his attributes.

To me, Dante has shown he can be a very good defender. He doesn't gamble (steals) or get a lot of blocks, but he stays in front of his man and contests well with his length (needs to improve ability over screens, but his size hurts him in that regards). This is why PER or someone saying a player is good or bad based on PER makes no sense. PER has a value, but it has major limitations. Exum has shown he has great quickness and passing ability. If he can hit shots even close to what he was doing in the summer league, it will open up his game tremendously, and I think he will. And Quin's offense should get him open shots.

For a kid that had limited experience when drafted, subtracting two+ seasons of him dealing with the injuries he has sustained, I think he is doing great. We'll see how he does the rest of the season and hopefully the playoffs, but I think he is doing fine considering the setbacks he has dealt with.
