What's new

How do the Jazz get this thing back on track?

Maybe all 7 eastern teams and Kings are behind us, at worst. That would be the 9th pick. I *would* be OK with that, and don't consider it a wasted opportunity.
The #9 pick get's you a 2nd or 3rd fiddle player like Gordon Hayward, not a franchise changing player...pass.

I'm guessing you came to this conclusion because Hayward was drafted at number 9 right?

Well I don't think I want that number 13 pick either, as we'll just end up with a 2nd or 3rd fiddle player like Kobe Bryant...... pass.

Greg Oden was drafted with the ninth pick? That's news to me...

Greg Oden is a franchise-changing player? That's news to me, yet he was picked exactly where the tankers want us to be.

No pick is a guarantee. You are playing the odds while installing bad habits.

You mean like Greg Oden?

So if you guys were to bet some money would you put your money on the better player in next years draft coming from the top 3 or the #9 pick?

I would put my money on the top 3

Of course, if that is the only factor in the equation.

You are assuming that if we get a top 3 pick then bad habits will have been installed...... there is no guarantee that this tank year affects any of our core players beyond this season, so if I cant assume that a top 3 pick will be better than a #9 pick then you shouldn't assume that our players will pick up bad habits from losing.

No. I came up with that conclusion by looking at history. I'll gladly eat crow when Joel Przybilla, Rodney White, Amare Stoudemire, Mike Sweetney, Andre Iguodala, Ike Diogu, Patrick O'Bryant, Joakim Noah, DJ Augustin, DeMar Derozan, Gordon Hayward, Kemba Walker, and Andre Drummond hoist a championship trophy or become inducted into the HOF though...I promise. Note: Trey Burke might be the exception here... :)

Tanking doesn't ensure getting a franchise player, therefore we shouldn't even try it .. even though it's our only chance at getting one, and thus our only chance at winning a championship.

Durrrrrrrp

Habits are learned and unlearned gradually. There is no "installation".

... so if I cant assume that a top 3 pick will be better than a #9 pick then you shouldn't assume that our players will pick up bad habits from losing.

If, over a single year, you reward bad play and punish good play (by sitting them out, trading them, etc.), that takes time to unlearn. The question is how certain you can be that this unlearning time will be worth the difference in the pick you are getting. There are very few sure bets regarding the draft.

Our only chance? Are you saying Utah has never had a franchise-changing player, or that they tanked to get it?

I'm saying a top pick is by far our best shot at landing a franchise player, especially in this draft.

In this draft, we don't even really seem to need a top (as in top 3) pick.

I agree that we are discussing probabilities. When you evaluate the probabilities, you have to evaluate other factors as well.

Difference between a process and an accomplished state.

However, my word choice could have been better.

Ya i kinda realized that after my post :)

Completely disagree. How did tanking hurt SA? GS? Chicago? It didn't. Besides, the Jazz have continually said that they gave Corbin a roster with less talent and are looking for good habits to be forged over this season as to whether or not he keeps his job. They have specifically gone out of their way to show that bad habits won't be tolerated.

You might as well have eaten that crow 30 years ago when John Stockton was drafted number 16 and the next year Karl Malone was drafted at number 13.
