What's new

How do we fix this team?

anybody that says terry rozier can shoot needs to have their vision checked, guy is a slighly more athletic rubio.

I'm ready to start Mitchell at PG.

Mitchell, Rubio
Burks, Exum
Ingles, O'Neal
Crowder, (Favors)
Gobert, Favors

I think Favs can actually be good in that lineup. Jae is sometimes too willing to shoot... good with the bench unit bad if it comes at the expense of better looks.

Favs has been really good. If you look at him and Ricky and say “which one of these guys deserves to start” it’s definitely Favs. I think the options behind Favs are better and require less dynamic options if that makes sense. Like if you run Thabo out there and tell him to shoot and play defense. Swapping out AB for Ricky is tough because he has to do more than just shoot and play defense... although... if he just did those two things at a decent level that’d also work.

Wait until the team gets going again because they will. Snyders teams start slow. The offense is complex. The players are thinking too much and not just playing yet. He runs them harder in practice than most teams and they dont have their legs under them early. Shots are off because of that. Crowder, Allen, Mitchell, Rubio, and Exum will all improve their shooting across the season from where they are.

I think you give it 5 games before a new starting lineup. I’m not opposed to a quick AB for Rubio sub to get a look at it.

After 5 games you have to change something up... at that point you’ve given it an adequate shot at working. If the strength of the team is the team then guys that have performed and been steady need to be rewarded and others need to take their turn sacrificing.

When Exum, Mitchell, Ingles, Crowder, Gobert play together our defense is incredible it has a defensive rating of 81.6. The offense isnt great but its still a net rating of +16. This is our 8th most used 5 man lineup. But even our most used 5 man lineup of the same with Rubio is +10.6 net rating.

Jazz lead the NBA in drives. We are getting to the rim a lot. But are shooting some of the worst percentages in the NBA on Drives at 43%. That number is going to go up and will make a huge difference. To make it go up we need to hit our open shots. That will start happening more and more as the season goes on just like it did last year.

Just like last year to start the year we are getting some of the most open looks from 3 in the NBA and shooting some of the worst percentage on that. Our team is getting the looks and shots it wants, we will start hitting them more and more and things will open up and get momentum.

Right now our bench from players 9-15 is awful. You can't tell me we would not get a better performance from GLeaguers or guys playing in Australia or China. The current bench all have guaranteed contracts so change is not going to happen this year. Quin would be playing these guys if he thought they would help.

Fair enough.

So if we had more outside shooting going in it would open up our inside looks... it’s seems that this is kind of a re-occurring thing. So maybe... instead of relying on guys who have traditionally been bad shooters... maybe we play guys who are better shooters or acquire players who are better shooters.

I just read Andy Baileys article... it’s time to move Jae to the starting lineup. He hasn’t shot well but he seems to be rushing his shot a little... playing with starters might give him and the starting lineup a boost.

We paid Favs more than fairly this offseason he is valued... hopefully this doesn’t unmotivate him. If so we move him in January.

Favors has been playing great this year. He is overpaid as a backup Center but that really doesnt matter unless we have someone we are trying to get and need the money. I see it much less likely that we clear out a chunk of our roster to attempt to sign a free agent that is unlikely to come than it is to make a trade when a good one occurs or even just stick the course.

Yes, we need better shooters. But our guys are all shooting some of the worst of their careers right now. Our guys will bounce back after they get their legs back under them and they start just playing and not overthinking things too much. But picking up better players at any position, especially good shooting ones is what we should always be doing.

They've never started slow defensively though. It's usually the offense that starts slow. The offense picking up this year won't save us if we still can't stop anyone.

I think it helps. We have the roster, but I think the struggles this season have been demoralizing and the focus and effort suffer because of it.

This team doesn't need to be the best defensive team of all time (especially since that relies on officiating), but it does need to put the ball in the basket.

This may be true. I don't know. I find it hard to believe that the best defensive team in the NBA last year is now ranked in the bottom half of the league just because they feel demoralized. We went through big time struggles last year and this team still fought hard on D.

Yeah, the defense is concerning but I think they are still adjusting to the rules and pace. Teams are also shooting a lot and really well against us from the mid range (where we want them to shoot from), we are also turning the ball over a lot that gives easy baskets, and teams are getting long rebounds off bad misses for easier fast breaks. Some of it is our offense that makes the defense worse.

Cutting through some of the bull ****, this isn't a roster fix. If it's not morale, the only modifiable factor is coaching, plain and simple. I resist that argument but it's the only one. The roster is here, and the culture is supposed to be as well.
