How Much $$$ Should Jazz Throw at Austin Reaves?

Racism. They really aren't that much alike at all

That's not racism. Gradey can shoot, drive, do some playmaking. He has three levels scoring the ball. He'll play a similar role. Not sure about the saucy behind-the-back pass.

Don't go crying "racism" when you get a comp you don't like. Doofus.

It's a ****ing awful comp dude. Gradey is an off ball player with some play connector playmaking. Maybe he can be a secondary creator down the line if his handle advances.

Reaves is a legit main ball handler and has an advanced handle. They aren't alike. Man was called Hillbilly Kobe for a reason.

If they weren't both white you wouldn't make this amateur hour comp

Reaves is a 2-guard and the 4th initiator on the Lakers. Gradey can initiate and he'll do it when he's in the league. Watch.

The max for him is 4/98.6M or extremely close to that. That would be a 24.65M cap hit over 4 years for us. Meanwhile the Lakers would have to pay him 36.8M and 38.5M per year in years 3 and 4 of his deal after 11.4M and 11.9M in years 1 and 2. That’s enough to make them think about it especially now that there is only 24 hours to match.

I’d match if I were them. Especially with the first two years at a discount.

Yeah, it’s a no-brainer

BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO THROW THE BAG AT HIM. The Lakers literally are not allowed to offer the Arenas max, they can ONLY MATCH the offer sheet.

If they don’t match the offer sheet then they get him for the MLE for four years and that just cannot stand. Remember, there are pick implications here too.

Make them pay. Not sure my opinion on Reaves, but if they’re going to match and it’s one day, well, open the purse-strings, Jeanie.

Oh yeah, that’s also a no brainer

In the case that no one offered Reaves the max I'm sure he would just take a short term deal so he could get to the money later.

So if you knew 100% they would match, you might be helping them by offering. It would hurt them more to have him on a 2 year mle deal than a 4 year Arenas max.

Problem is if they have to pay him more in later years, they can’t keep everyone, they decide to blow things up, they tank in 2027, we lose their protected pick.

I hear you. And I agree that the Jazz should give him the offer sheet and force the Lakers hand. There’s at least a non-zero chance that they let him walk. It’s worth the risk. If it fails, then I look at taking on somebody’s bad salary for a decent future asset (picks or super swaps) or I sign a handful of players on cheap 2 year deals - with the second year being a team option. Value, control and flexibility is what I’m most concerned with.

If the Jazz do make that offer, the Lakers have to either:

A.) let him walk for nothing at the price we’re comfortable paying him.

or

B.) pay him $11.4 million in 23/24, $11.9 million in $24/25, $36.8M in 25/26 and $38.5M in 26/27 - the exact season that the Jazz will then own their ‘27 pick.

Heads, Lakers lose. Tails, Jazz win.
