How the Mormons Make Money

...you'll see a general sentiment that they have a "right to rule," which goes right alongside the assumption that this is "obviously good for the economy."...

Do you see the views of "right to rule" and "obviously good for the economy" (they are there, no doubt) as, generally, mutually inclusive, or merely parallel?

I don't know what relation they have to one another. That's a complex question. They are definitely bedfellows, but they are also related to a lot of economic and political conceptions that go way beyond SLC politics.

In other words, Trout can send you a PM with specific physical threats and not receive even a yellow card.

Comical. I guess you missed the part where you initiated the whole thing, right? When someone asks me to "Meet them face to face", I call them on it. Ask Craig1221 -- that lunch was delicious. I'm old, fat, and beyond slow. My boobs rival most teenage girls, and I'm 100% positive I could smash your face. (in a pie eating contest)

Thanks, mods, for running a stupid ship.

To quote the great sage, and eminent know it all Vinylone: "Cry Harder"

I agree that disagreeing with the church on positions does not always equal being against the church. However when they piss and moan about something that has no affect on them it is hard to see them as having anything more than a grudge against the church.

I do not pay tithing, I am not active and I do not live my life in a way that follows the Church's teachings. If a member chooses to pay their 10% or hell even 30% what business of mine is that? That is between that person and the Church. If it is something they believe in then using words like "rob", "swindle", "extort" and others are nothing but someone trying to grind an ax in my opinion. Why not just say I do not agree or care for having to tithe %10 of my income to a religious entity and call it a day?

Great post.

When I was active in the church, I never paid tithing. There are people in the church who feel they are obligated to pay it and then they struggle which I do not agree with. My neighbor for example, great guy, awesome family. They struggle. I feel for him. He pays his tithing. I don't see why he doesn't keep the money to pay some of his bills and provide for his family. I don't believe God would be upset with some one in that position. To each their own.

Of course Gordon wouldn't be mad at a person who takes care of their family, but just like most stories in the bible, bom, etc. it revolves around obedience. My old man has a saying, "Do what is right, let the consequence follow", and I think that tithing falls in that category. Does it always work out? Nope. Do people believe that it works out most of the time? I'd say that's a yes.

to your point, there is plenty of political apathy amongst non-Mormons in SLC. I can't say I blame them. Can you?

Can you blame them? Damn right you can. So, apathy is nobody's fault? People could get up off their asses and make a difference, but it's so much easier to blame Teh Mormonz! about everything. They (the people who genuinely bitch and piss and moan) have nobody to blame but themselves.

I'm pretty surprised that this comment didn't spark some kind of counter-attack.

This says it all about your personality. You think so highly of yourself and so lowly of those around you, that you actually expect people to respond to you, because you're just THAT smart. Everyone loves to know that people are reading/responding to their posts, but very few have the gall to actually complain when people don't.

he said he didn't know I reported. I imagine he would have known I reported it if he received some kind of warning. This seemed like a fair conclusion.

My apologies if I was wrong. Truly.

Like I told you in your threatening PM, I know your personality very well, as there are few people as unbearable as you, your kind generally tend to stick out like a sore thumb. I had a pretty good feeling that you're the kind of guy that would pick a fight, back down when it's accepted, and then go tell the teacher that the other guy was being a meanie. Confirmation of that was pleasurable, I must admit. I do hope that you got an infraction for threatening me though, that would be the cherry on top.

tell us, what's it like to live in a hall of mirrors?

.. or care.. Share with me the scriptures in the bible that state you 'must tithe or else' (obedience) .. and I'll show you 10:1 that speaks of tithing out of love for brother or love/appreciation for God.

go.
Well sure that's the end game. But none of us are perfect last I heard and there are many religious concepts people don't understand within their own faith. Sometimes you just obey because you have faith. And that obedience is rewarded and maybe even down the line you get some enlightenment. Hopefully you maybe get to a point where you do good things for the sake of doing good things. But if I waited to do good things til I felt good about them I wouldn't be a very good Mormon. Not to mention coming from that angle doesn't appeal to me (seems very lazy).

Another good example would be the Word of Wisdom. Mormons quit smoking long before it was found to be harmful.

My apologies for appearing to have questioned your most righteous intentions. I'll retreat back to my former position of subserviency to your obviously more heightened spiritual awareness/depth.

Don't apologize, bro. You see, when you live right -- on and off the field -- magic happens. You just keep doing your thing, and perhaps one day, if you're lucky, Gordon will accept you just the way you are.

WTF? You're weird, Dude.

What did you feel was so wrong with the way Conan politely expressed his views that made you feel it necessary to demean him? That was a very respectful post.

To be honest and transparent, I live everyday of my life inside a Mormon bubble .. nothing wrong with that, and I actualy find it a nice place to live. I respect those I socialize with and they respect me. When I see or hear anyone bashing Mormons, I am quick to defend, consistently.

Therefore, I admit to being somewhat hyper-sensitive to some (Conan) that perpetuate the stereotype that they simply feel elite. Right or wrong .. Conan comes off that way. I've been cool, I think, but self-righteousness attitudes are less fun to side with.

Ya, I don't get this guy at all. He goes off out of the blue. Starting to see a pattern there.
