If Irving and Kanter are gone & we're on the clock...

Do we take Williams at SF or Knight at PG?
Or trade down?
Or reach a bit for another big?
KoC needs to know what he wants to do if this scenario unfolds...

I've been thinking about the Jazz's strategy in this draft. I imagine with two top-12 picks and a team that is about as close to a blank canvas as possible, that KOC is dreaming up almost every possible scenario. And not just with the various combinations regarding the #1 and #2 picks. I think, if the Jazz brass are wise, that they are figuring out who they want in this draft, working the phones, and putting together potential trade packages in order to get those players. Even though Cleveland has two picks in the top four, this scenario that the Jazz are in is pretty rare, as far back as I can remember. The Jazz have to get this one right.

We take Derrick Williams and figure out what to do next. He is a great prospect. If we have to trade Millsap eventually we do that.

Are you frickin' kidding me - KOC takes Williams and laughs all the way back to Utah.

This is the best of all scenarios.

This is such an obvious question. We take Williams ASAP. Then at 12 we take one of these bigs. Bismack Biyombo, Jan Vesely, Donatas Motiejunas, or Jonas Valanciunas. (Kanter is gone in this senerio.)

Couldn't agree more. Let's hope coach Calipari's little diatribe about Kanter being the man was convincing for Wolves.

Well, luckily for the Jazz we pretty much have gaping holes at the 1, 2, 3, and 5.

If Williams is available, the Jazz probably tell David Stern to just go ahead and announce it while he makes his appearance for the Minnesota pick.

At 12, the draft strategy may change a little if you were planning on taking an SF, but that's an easy switch. You start looking at which of the bigs has fallen, or any of Burks, Thompson, and potentially Walker or Jimmer if either are there.

Speaking of Irving and being on the clock ... there's a story trending that a girl is going to release a video (from Skype) of Irving pleasuring himself. Don't suspect that's really news worthy .. except I thought dUKe played as a TEAM.

Jazz could try to take Williams at SF, but the consensus is that he's a PF (four). He would be the perceived BPA, but I'm still not sold on his game translating to the NBA. He or Millsap would then have to be moved ASAP.

Hayward and Favors? I'd be surprised if those two aren't averaging 30 very productive minutes at the 2 and 5 from the start of the 12/13 season.

If this happens we pick Dwill 2 so fast Stern does't even get off the stage!

I've tried to reach out through several different outlets to people in Minnesota to get an idea on what they want and what they think the TWolves will do. From every single person I've talked to they say there is a 99% chance that Williams will go #2. They believe that they will either keep the pick and take Williams, or whoever they trade the pick to will take Williams. Who really knows what's going to happen, especially when you throw Kahn into the mix, but it does seem like it's going to come down to Kanter/Knight for us.

In response to the OP, if Stern announces that Minnesota takes anyone other than Williams, then Stern will return to the podium in no more than 8 seconds to announce that we have drafted Derrick Williams from the University of Arizona.

Put me in the "D-Will is best case scenario" boat with the others.

While some NBA scouts don't think he has a true position, I do think he has the athletic ability to play the 3 very effectively. In fact, if he falls to Utah I think it's fair to say that he has far more longterm potential at 3 than Milsap.

I also don't think drafting Williams would spell the end to Milsap. A starting frontcourt of Favors, Jefferson and Williams would be amazing, especially with Milsap being the first man off the bench. Will Sap go for it? At this point, it really doesn't matter. He's under contract with the Utah Jazz, and if that's where they decide to play him, I'm sure that Milsap will still give it 100% regardless of whether he likes the move or not.

If the Jazz were lucky enough to fall into that scenario, I think the only things missing to make them a true contender (down the road of course) is a defensive big who can eat up minutes off the bench and of course 1 or 2 guys who can hit the 3.

Sure. The mancrush on JV is based on his basic tools, level of competition/experience and the improvement you can see in his game and body over several years worth of youtube. There are now 32 pages of discussion here that contain better analysis than I can provide:

https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1090163

The short version is that JV possesses an elite combination of length, hands/touch, athleticism and instincts, with an aggressiveness around the basket on both ends that defies his European heritage. His second jump is super quick and he has a knack for converting in traffic. Jonas is a force around the rim. Plus, you can't foul him as he shoots FTs @ 90%. JV does not have a polished post game but has shown some new moves over the season. By all accounts he has phenomenal intangibles and puts the work in.

Statistics back him up. Jonas scored almost 8 ppg which doesn't look that impressive at first. However, the fact that he had very little post game, limited minutes, and the ball almost never was passed to him makes that number look a lot better, particularly paired with his 70% shooting. He led or almost led (depending on how you read the numbers) the Euroleague in boards/min. This is as a rookie 18 year old in the most competitive league outside the NBA. Rebounding is a skill that translates very well, he's going to be effective in the NBA in this regard.

His athleticism is deceptive as he doesn't usually come off the floor very high. But that doesn't mean he can't.

That's nasty. Probably the biggest dig on JV I see is that people don't think he is enough of an athlete. Well there you go.

*This is only the short version compared to the 32 pages of yammering going on in realgm.

Irving and Kanter gone:

KOC: Hello is this Washington? Yes, do you still want Williams? Yes, 6, 18, 34 and you take Bell, thats right. Thank you we'll make the pick, and inform the commisioner of the trade, but lets not announce it untill you've drafted Jonas at 6 for us.

In this scenario we take DW!! Of the (3) best prospects he could fill our biggest void. Harris is obviously still a solid PG and we already have (3) quality big men in Al, Sap, and Favors. IF Williams can play the 3 comfortably we could have an incredibly dangerous depth chart. I'm still crossing my fingers for Jimmer at 12 and our line-ups would look like this:

Harris/Jimmer
Hayward/CJ
Williams/Evans
Jefferson/Millsap
Favors/Okur (hopefully) or Fes

If Memo is healthy that 2nd unit looks stacked.

I will say that JV does put up good numbers and I do think he will have a career in this league. But watching him play (I've watched full games) he does not pass the eye test for me at all (with regards to a #3 pick). I think he's a first round pick, but I don't see why you'd use a #3 pick on a project. I guess if you think he can become an elite center in the league, then it's worth it, but I think his ceiling is a serviceable center in the NBA. And if I'm picking in the top 3, I want someone that can impact a game right now. You (Brown Notes) may think he can come in right away and do that, and maybe that's where our opinions differ.
