How does that play into rookie deals? Does the deal shorten by a year? I would think because they never signed a contract we still get the full terms, but i am not sure. Anyone?

the new rookie contract structure has yet to be determined, as that will one of the many things sorted out by the new collective bargaining agreement. it probably won't change too much from the previous one.

Yeah, Kanter and Burks aren't under contract yet... but the Jazz retain their rights... so they're still up for the same contract whenever basketball resumes, although i don't know if guys like Heyward and Favors get a year shaved off their deals.

I'm sure you want Kanter here as small amount of time as possible, right? So you're hoping a missed year cuts a year off his rookie deal, right Verlin?

Makes sense. Be cool to have potentially two years worth of lotto picks on the same rookie scale. Obviously I would prefer the season to start, well, maybe not that obvious as I am hoping and praying for a cancelled season so we have one less year of Kanter.

Well, we'd be a year closer to getting out from under the contracts of Harris and Jefferson. And Memo would be a FA and completely off the books.
More likely, I think, is that if an entire season is lost, it is just counted as null and no time is credited against contracts. Whatever time is left just starts from Oct 2012 forward.

He didn't comment on this directly but on the radio yesterday Locke said one of the things the players union needs to realize and may motivate them to get a deal done sooner then later is if the year is lost they will not get it back. He mentioned avg NBA player lasts 5yrs and losing 1yr would take a 20% loss off his total potential earning.

Good point. And average career length probably has as much (or more) to do with the influx of new players every year as it does with the wear and tear of playing.

Playing devil's advocate, though, I think those with power wthin the union are the big name players. They don't care about the little guys. So the motivation is to ensure there are $18M/per MAX deals for as many years as possible and no hard cap. And any reduction in the cap or tax threshold would really limit trades, particulary the higher end sign-and-trades. I just don't see much motivation on either side to get a deal done. If this lasts > 1 yr, I wouldn't even put it past the owners to field teams of replacement players. It happened in the NFL; I could see it happening in the NBA.

Max contracts are where I think should be some wiggle room to negotiate. Still have lengthy 6-7yr contract but maybe make the first 4yrs guaranteed and reduction in guarantee if traded or released and no team is going to trade or release a player that is truly a max player unless that player (like Melo) forces a trade. Also the players should realize if a team did that they would most likely spend that difference on one or two other players anyway (like you said Glass not that the union really cares about the mid to little guys anyway) I mean this is just a quick example with out getting into the details but I think this is the type of concessions that should be talked about.

Coon answered a question about this in his latest chat (though it was regarding RFA's in a lost year). He said if the entire season was lost, the owners and union could agree to count it as a year that never happened. Thus all contracts roll forward to where they would have been at the start of this year. He didn't specifically address the rookies, but my assumption is they would be signed under whatever the new terms of the CBA are.
