What's new

J. J Redick says not being in the rotation in his early years was VERY beneficial for him.

In Redick's mind, the best thing that ever happened was getting drafted into Orlando with a coach who refused to insert him into the rotation. For two years, Van Gundy challenged him to become a more complete player and Redick thinks "a lot about what kind of career trajectory I would've had without Stan, and I'm grateful for what he did for me."
"Those years in Orlando humbled me," Redick said, "and gave me perspective on basketball and life."

Pretty cool article.

Also, I think this ties in with an earlier thread of mine, regarding how beneficial it could be to have our players fighting each other for several seasons for rotation minutes.

I think Kanter coming off the bench for his 2nd career start getting a 20/20, and Favors going for 23/15 in 3 quarters agrees with this as well.

People complained all season how Kanter was not getting enough minutes to develop, yet it is obvious to everyone with eyes that he has been improving continuously, and has now put together a string of 3 solid performances.

I think that Al is gone, Millsap will be gone unless he signs for cheap-- leaving us with Fav and Enes. Along with this, I think people will always under appreciate how crucial these first couple of years were to their development, and how much better they could be in the long run.

All Hail KOC.

For the record, JJ was drafted 11th, and only averaged over 20mpg into his 4th season as an NBA player (averaged 15, 8, 17 mpg in his first three seasons).

So we should disregard JJ's path to improvement because he has not won a championship yet.

Well. I guess most of the NBA will never improve then.

I guess JJ Reddick saying this means Lebron James will never win a championship. Oh wait. He did. I thought riding the bench makes you a stud?

Talent wins championships. Plain and simple. Not magical playoff experience. Not riding the bench. Not winning culture. None of that b.s.

JJ definitely was not ready when he came up. However, I think based on who was ahead of Burks, he should've gotten more minutes. He looked ready last year and in summer league they were touting him to have a breakout year. Demoting him like Corbin did was not beneficial. Kanter was not ready last year, but deserved more minutes this year. Favors should've been getting more minutes as well. The problem was that Corbin has a phobia about substituting players. He seldom plays matchups and almost never subs in for defense which is what he should be doing with Favors for Al all the time.

Reddick has a great attitude and Millsap could learn a lot from him.

Question: Favors has had more minutes than Kanter and has been playing basketball a lot longer too. Why is Kanter better than Favors right now?

Answer: Work ethic. Kanter has it, Favors doesn't.

I don't think anyone would deny that our young guys look good right now and clearly have developed a lot in practice. All I'm saying at this point is that it will really suck to see Kanter back to the bench for a guy who won't be here next year. I'd like to get Favors and Kanter acclimated to playing TOGETHER, regardless of how butthurt it makes Paul and Al. (Same goes for Foye, Earl, Marv, etc)

Hahahaha Nope, JJ saying this doesn't mean that at all. JJ saying this simply says that there is a lot to be learned when you aren't ready to play 30mpg right out of the gets, and how much you can learn both as an athlete and as a player once you go through this experience.

It's funny, because we all know that Derrick and Enes are going to say the exact same thing one day (Enes has already been saying it on a consistent basis over the past 2 seasons).

Keep up the ******** posts though guys, I'm getting some pretty good laughs up here.

Better?? One certainly isn't clear-cut better than the other.

In fact, if you really wanted to have this argument, Favors is the better athlete thus far. He was far-and-beyond our best player in the 2012 playoffs. Kanter has yet to string together performances like that, with stakes that-high.

Burks has to share rotation minutes with Hayward, Foye, Marvin, and Carroll (before he made his very-recent transition to playing backup-point)

JJ wasn't getting rotation time due to the likes of Maurice Evans. Maurice who?? Exactly.

I'm a Duke fan & JJ is my favorite Dukie... that said, I didn't think he would be that good but he has developed into a nice passer & very decent defender.

Also, posterz here don't want to hear any of this:
- Fire Corbin, he cant manage players
- Trade Al because he's a ball stopper & cant defend
- Praise Paul because he's our own 2nd rounder, even though they overlook his "small-big man" complex
- Make Alec Burks a point guard
- Make a trade NOW KOC/DL

It'll suck, but understand that this season is over in 2 months. We should be rejoicing on Jazzfanz right now, as the performances from Favors and Kanter are giving strong indications that they are coming along smoothly, and perhaps it is time to let go of Al Jefferson.

If all we have is four J.J. Redick caliber improvements within our young core, THEN our management has.....

Let me finish this more-accurate quote for you: Our management will have passed with flying colours. This is why SVG said on the radio that he'd keep playing our vets, and this is why we are seeing improvements and skillset-expansions across every single young player in our squad. We have a solid coaching staff, a superb front-office, and very good odds to maintain a powerful western-conference team for years to come.

I just hope we can cap everything off with a Trey Burke draft.
