Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

I'm concerned Ainge is being a little psychotic here. Giving the Knicks time to think and gauging the reaction of fans I think plays out poorly for the Jazz the longer it goes on and if we miss a deal because we're making a sticking point about Grimes or one pick then that is the other side of the coin of how Ainge operates. We don't need to make ashes of the other team in the deal, and we don't have to nuke the ashes either. It's great this worked with Minnesota, but Ainge could afford to have a little more DL in him instead of continue to cultivate resentment among other front offices.

If it's two picks and ****, just pass. If it's four picks and swaps then operate in good faith. Please, Danny.
Right... I think you have a negotiating window of about 7 days while teams are still in summer league and talking. Walking away without a deal then the pressure doesn't ramp up again until before training camp. By then they might have cooled down.

I do think the NY media has been going the other way... "Do what you need to get a deal done". So I think that might be okay. The media and fans kind of were like meh on it before... but now that it might be real they have gotten a little frothy.

Everyone needs to calm down a little bit here. Just because the deal hasn't closed yet doesn't mean Ainge is overplaying his hand. From my vantage point the Jazz clearly have the leverage here:

1) Mitchell is under contract for 3 years. This is not a fire sale, and he'll maintain significant value for years.
2) There are multiple teams interested and willing to pay market value.

Not to say he won't push any of these teams too far, but would take a massive mismanagement of the situation for no deal to get done here.

If that’s the deal and we get Obi over Quickley I’ll be very happy.
Quickley and Obi coming to the Jazz just makes sense. They will both be too low in the depth chart to be of great practical value to the Knicks and we need some salary ballast and young players.

I hope you're right, I just keep hearing from seemingly everyone in national media that Brunson and Don is a silly backcourt and that it doesn't make them a premier team in the East.

Its hard to imagine these players being the hold up for NY. The deal really doesn't seem like too much especially when you compare it with the Rudy trade. I guess I could see some of the hold up being protections or something that NY wants to work through today. I think it's close and I wouldn't expect this package to need to change much to get done.
I think they are concerned with the short term and want to make sure they have a team left to be good next year. The front office wants to keep their jobs. I think you look at the roster after the trade and they would really need guys like Grimes. They have no 3 and D guy unless Barrett starts shooting the ball. I think Reddish is basically done there.

We could also do them a solid and throw in a Bogey for Rose/Fournier to keep as much draft equity as possible.

The sentiment I keep hearing now is "its not ideal but you get the star and figure it out". Which is different than what I heard before.

I think the Shams report yesterday about it taking days, weeks, months is from the Jazz side of things saying "we will be here all day... so might as well just pony up". I think its a slight bluff.

I really want Cam Reddish in the deal. I think he has more potential than he has shown.
He for sure ends up in the deal. Bigger salary and Thibs clearly hates him. Allows the Knicks to save face a bit by putting him in there.

I'd be fine with this deal with either Obi or Quickley, though I'd rather have Obi as well.

Ultimately I just want this deal done, though not at the expense of it being a lousy deal.

One small thing in this deal to watch... NY has a good amount of second round picks. I might try and snake a couple of those as minor as it sounds. I think some of our guys like JC, Bogey, Vando could net firsts but some might need a second with them to get a first... I would try to sneak a couple of those to grease the wheels on those deals.
