Sloan, Williams discuss recent success

Some thoughts from the Jazz prior to this afternoon's game against the Clippers:
-- Coach Jerry Sloan on Utah's defense during its comeback win over the Lakers on Friday night: "I thought we played with a lot more intensity. When you're playing with intensity, you defend, you rebound, you play basketball. I think that was important for us, to be able to get back in the ballgame. You have to make some stops. You've got to rebound the ball. Just play fundamental basketball."
-- Sloan on playing "good defense" while holding nine of the last 10 opponents under 100 points: "I don't know about that. I see a lot of things we're doing wrong. We talked about that [Saturday] morning. Things we have to do a better job with. We have a tendency at times to say, 'I'll just guard my own man and I don't want to help anybody.' ... That's not conducive to winning, generally."
-- Sloan on his decision to double-team Kobe Bryant in the final two minutes of the game, after Kobe had scored 11 straight points: "Well, we have done that in the past and they find [the open man]. ... The guy [Ron] Artest, he missed a couple shots [Friday] night. Last year in the playoffs, he made those shots. So you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. I guess I should say, 'Darn.' But, anyway, that's what you run into. I think [Bryant] even pointed to Artest and said, 'They are going to double-team.' And he was wide-open in the corner but missed. ... You have to give up something. Sometimes you get burned."
-- Sloan on the play of second unit guards Earl Watson and Ronnie Price: "Earl started playing better and it looked like he was going to take that job over, sort to speak, as a point guard behind Deron [Williams]. And Ronnie, he's such a competitor. ... They play really well off each other, especially defensively.
-- Deron Williams on the Jazz's defense: "We have great principles. As long as we put the effort out, we should hold teams to a pretty [low] field-goal percentage and under 100."
-- Asked to be specific about the Jazz's defensive principles, Williams smiled and said, "I'm going to have to list all our principles? We have a lot of principles."
-- Williams on whether rallying from a 19-point deficit made the Laker win special: "It was a good win. I don't think it was that special because we've been in that position before. I think a special win would be doing that, like, winning in L.A., which we haven't done in awhile. This was definitely a good win, though. A good team win. We fought back."
-- Williams on the play of Utah's bench: "They have been tremendous. They've given us so much energy. They've gotten us back into so many games. They've extended leads. ... Their intensity and energy is contagious."
