Jazz looking to pick up Gustavo Ayon off waiver

Jazz can cut McNeal at any point, even during the season (I think up until a certain date).

1 Burke
2 Burks
3 Hayward
4 Favors
5 Kanter
6 Evans
7 Gobert
8 Lucas
9 Clark
10 Biedrens
11 M. Williams
12 Jefferson
13 Rush
14 McNeal

If we sign Ayon we would technically have 15 players under contract. However McNeal could be cut.

Damn, looks like McNeal is getting cut then if we get Ayon.

Yeah, as has been mentioned, Mcneal isn't guaranteed, and I wasn't counting him in my thirteen players. Again, thirteen is I believe the requirement, so there isn't a need to take on any more.

This speculation (not news) is a bit old -- though it hadn't been discussed here. I think Pelton posted this on Thursday. Pelton seems to like Ayon (see his most recent ESPN chat).

I think (if I understand the waiver procedures correctly), that the successful claim for Ayon will be announced either tomorrow or Tuesday. I think this is a little bit different from amnesty waivers. In this case the teams with salary cap room or sufficient trade exceptions get to make a claim for Ayon. Among those teams submitting a claim, the team with the worst record last year automatically gets Ayon at his contracted salary (1.5 million). That's why Pelton listed teams in the order he did. If none of those teams claim him, he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

I don't know who this guy is not do I have an opinion but if we're thin with big guys then what the worst that could happen? We give more minutes to Gobert, Biedrins, Evans or Williams and they're absolutely terrible? Yeah, so what.

I still remember Ayon outplaying Millsap twice when Ayon was with the Hornets (now Pelicans). He overpowered Sap.

Looks like Cy found one of the boxscores.

Yeah I remembered that game. He was tough as nail on defense and rebounding and just really a tough minded guy who messed with Millsap.

I like him quite a bit actually. I think he could a full time backup PF in this league for sure.
