Jazz May Be A Part of 3-Team Deal w/ Clippers

Yup, and they like to sign or trade for players they could had for cheap if they drafted smarter ( Boozer, big Al ). I like Mo, but letting him got for 3mil/year to Milwaukee was indeed one of the biggest KOC mistakes.
Yep a third-string under-sized combo guard who shot 38%/26% with Utah. Clearly, he was poised for stardom and KOC and Sloan were idiots. Utah should have immediately cut Lopex and Arroyo after Mo's stellar year and signed him to a 7-yr contract.

Mo's a good player. I don't consider him one of the best PG's in the league and I think he's overpaid. But I hope this trade gets done. Williams can step in and give us, at worst, as much as Harris did. And provide better perimeter shooting. It also replaces a TPE that will expire in December with an expiring contract. Mo would certainly be a valuable trade asset if the Jazz happen to hit a rough patch and are not a playoff team. Imagine what Chicago may have offered this year after losing Rose.

But more importantly, getting Mo allows KOC to IMMEDIATELY explore trade options for Harris. I think Devin has some value with up-tempo teams that play a less-structured offense. Or just go with 2 PG's and give teams the option of taking whichever one they want at the deadline, either as a player or expiring contract.

^ If you want to trade a TPE for (essentially) cap space, then all you have to do is renounce it.

So....

deadline for Dallas and Odom is Friday (I think).

Can't blame Mo for looking after his future.

My hopes:
We get Mo for next year only
We get something else for facilitating the trade
A deal for Harris is made immediately afterward.
Nailed it.

I wouldn't mind having both Mo and Harris. They could play with each other and both can shoot. Who do you start alongside Hayward is the question?

What?
My point is that the TPE expires in December. If it's not used we get the same return we did for Harpring...NADA!

By using the TPE for Mo, we're essentially extending that asset until the trade deadline. Yes, a team would have to take salary back, but at that point Mo is an expiring contract so it doesn't really matter. But Mo is much more than just an expiring contract. He could be a valuable asset to a contender as well (and that's worst case assuming Utah is out of the playoff hunt). Trade Mo and Utah could get, at worst, a pick in the teens to late first, depending on who needs him. That's not a bad return for Memo in and of itself.

But it also allows Utah to immediately shop Harris. And isn't that what everyone wants?

The only way that Utah would trade Mo at the deadline (and thus completely gut the team of an experienced and capable PG) would be if we are totally out of the playoff picture AND get a great offer.

the better way to look at the Mo acquisition is this:
(a) it's another strong sign that KOC is committed to the free agent class of '13.
(b) we might be able to get something from Harris (which you mention).

I don't think it is right to look at our use of the TPE on Mo as extending that asset into the future.

There is real risk in using the TPE for Mo, since the Magic are definitely gonna move Howard and we could help with that. That's why we need to get something for the TPE beside Mo Williams... otherwise I think it's fair to say we could do better.

to me some of the beauty of the trade has worn off. i liked it as a precursor to a devin deal that could net us a pick last night. now that that's not happening, we're just talking about having a crowded PG spot for a year and then nothing new to build with for the four youngs.

having said that, glasseater is right. the chances of using the TPE are going to diminish quickly, and then in december it would be worth nothing. now we have another asset that we can use up to the feb deadline as trade bait, and even if that doesn't work we could always S&T him in the summer of 2013 for another TPE. basically a way to renew a trade chip, plus in the meantime you have a PG that gives you some variety because his strengths/weaknesses are very different from devin's.

Monson: Mo Williams has accepted his 8.5 million option, and will become a Jazz man.

Hmm. I think I'm still into this. I like Mo Williams. But there had better be SOME sweetener in there (Bell to Clippers, Jae Crowder, Beaubois, SOMETHING).
