Jazz Offer Millsap Extension

Initial contract extension negotiations between Paul Millsap and the #UtahJazz began this week, @sltrib has learned. #NBA

Talks between Jazz and Millsap were positive and both sides would like to keep him in a Utah uniform. However, all indications are Millsap
will become an unrestricted free agent July 2013 and fully explore his options.

The Jazz made an initial extension offer to Millsap for three years at about $25 million, the most possible under new CBA rules. Millsap
isn't expected to accept the offer, and is prepared to enter training camp with knowledge he'll become a free agent in less than a year.

Millsap and the Jazz have options moving forward. He could remain long term with Utah, sign elsewhere or be traded: nothing's certain.

No way he signs that. I know it's a starting point, but he'll get at least a few million more.

Millsap will get more than that on the open market... easy. The question is, do we want to pay Millsap what he's worth on the open market? I'm guessing 12-14 million?

I hope not. I love Millsap, but that's way too much for an average, and undersized, starting PF.

That's b.s. that the Jazz can only offer him a 7.5% raise when he'll be eligible for up to 30% of the cap as a FA. I thought that was bizarre so I checked with Coon, who's page confirms this is true.

The only other option is designating him their five year extension guy and hoping he takes the security of 5 years over a higher 3 year deal & possible injury before FA. But that screws designating Favors as the five year guy if he turns out to be of that caliber.

Trade him for boozer if that is the case. Not that I want anymore undersized overpaid pf on the team. I see him getting overpaid with the hawks next year. I would have loved him for 8.5 million a year and as a backup player but I don't see that happening.

I'm wondering why the Jazz leaked this info... The organization normally does a pretty good job keeping a lid on rumors and such. Is it because the Jazz want to let the fanbase know that they ATTEMPTED to sign Millsap, however, there is nothing they can do but let him explore free agency? After all, Millsap is a fan favorite and an all around great teammate that realistically has to be let go.

Also, The Jazz can know give him the Deron treatment and trade him because he "wasn't committed to the franchise after his current contract."

I Know... I know... I've got my tin foil hat working overtime in this post, so be it.

Yep. Slightly insulting imo but it's a business and Millsap should be able to see the sense in them making such an offer.

Insulting? Because the Jazz offered him the maximum?

He would be worth that much -barely- but if he signed that he would be obviously a sixth man type player for three more years. He thinks he's worth more (I don't) so he can try the market and I hope by then that Favors has eliminated any doubt about being 'the man'.

After seeing what Kris humphries got this offseason (12 Million per 2) and G. Wallace (10 million per 4) I don't blame him for thinking he's worth more. If he doesn't injure himself, someone will offer him 10+ million per season for four years or 12-14 million for a shorter contract.

that's too much for an undersized PF. 9-10 per year should be the maximum, imo, i'd be even ok with 11 per year. if he wants more, than led him go or try to trade him...
