What other choice do we have now but to trade him? Like many of you, I don't see how he can accept the max we can offer him. Why would he? Or can the offer be raised when Al is off the books after this year. I just don't think we can justify paying him 10-12 per. Very good player to have, but it doesn't seem to make sense for us.
The maximum amount of money a player can sign for is contingent on the number of years that player has played and the total of the salary cap. The maximum salary of a player with 6 or fewer years of experience is either $9,000,000 or 25% of the total salary cap (2010–11: $14,511,000), whichever is greater. For a player with 7–9 years of experience, the maximum is $11,000,000 or 30% of the cap (2010–11: $17,413,200), and for a player with 10+ years of experience, the maximum is $14,000,000 or 35% of the cap (2010–2011: $20,315,400).[9]
• 2011 CBA: Players coming off their rookie scale contracts can extend for four additional seasons, although the team can designate one player who is eligible for five seasons at the maximum salary. A team can have only one designated player on its roster at any time. All other veterans can extend for four total seasons, which includes the seasons remaining on their current contract. The extension in an extend-and-trade contract is limited to three total seasons, which includes the seasons remaining on the current contract.
I don't think you have a tinfoil hat on. This is a good move by the franchise. Paul is going to get overpaid this off season. By making it known that they attempted to sign him for what I see as a reasonable contract they have a built in excuse to the fanbase when he is traded or when he leaves via free agency. This is a great future PR move. They are looking into the future and see that this is probably going to be a problem. Might as well address it now instead of after the fact.I'm wondering why the Jazz leaked this info... The organization normally does a pretty good job keeping a lid on rumors and such. Is it because the Jazz want to let the fanbase know that they ATTEMPTED to sign Millsap, however, there is nothing they can do but let him explore free agency? After all, Millsap is a fan favorite and an all around great teammate that realistically has to be let go.
Also, The Jazz can know give him the Deron treatment and trade him because he "wasn't committed to the franchise after his current contract."
I Know... I know... I've got my tin foil hat working overtime in this post, so be it.
Insulting? Because the Jazz offered him the maximum?
He would be worth that much -barely- but if he signed that he would be obviously a sixth man type player for three more years. He thinks he's worth more (I don't) so he can try the market and I hope by then that Favors has eliminated any doubt about being 'the man'.
Utah had to make the offer to show their interest in keeping him. It's not an insult because I can guarantee Sap's agent has him informed that Utah's hands are tied. Like Billy said, both sides know he isn't going to, nor should sign it, but the FO has to go through the motions to show their interest. Also, this is just the max for extension. Utah could still re-sign him for more money on a new contract, if they want to overpay, depending on what you think he might be worth. I'm guessing he'll get 12 per, and that's probably overpaying a bit, but the truth is, Utah is a team that has to overpay some players at times in order to build a competetive team. If Sap is willing to stay for 12 per, I'm not so sure Utah won't pay it, when you look around at how much some of these other players are getting.
Millsap's future for the Jazz should and hopefully will be a great sixth man. He could be an average starter at the PF position but would be a great above average force with the second unit coming off the bench. His size, quickness and overall athleticizm produce some concerns against the more athletic and bigger starters in the league on both ends of the floor. Around 10 per year should be the most we should be willing to spend. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Millsap supporter, but that's the limit, imo.
He isn't a star PF or anything, but he is definitely a top 10 PF.
Well, I wish I could say I was surprised but after Boozer, Deron, and a laundry list of others I'm not. Greed is killing our society and this is a perfect example. Thats a damn good offer and alot of money, especially in this economy. If he doesnt want to play basketball for millions in front of the best fans the NBA has to offer then F him. Oh, and dont get me started on the Jazz and mr cheapskate himself (ya I'm talkin to YOU Greggy boy). I mean seriously your gonna lowball our best player and expect him to want to stay? LOL this is why were the Jazz.
