Jazz Offseason Plan

I think it would be a big mistake to trade him but I'm honestly starting to think that the front office is strongly considering it.
Unless you are getting some real future asset I have no idea how an Ingles trade is going to help us win. He’s never hurt… toggles between on and off ball beautifully. Fills in whenever the pg is hurt.

The acquiring team would have to know they are getting a not mentally locked in Joe right?

Capwise a Bogey trade makes way more sense. If you got an expiring you’d be in a range where you could pivot and become a cap space team with some maneuvers.

Then you factor in the locker room stuff. Joe is the heart and soul of the locker room… I’m sure our already chilly vibes would get so much worse if we moved Joe.

I am fully prepared for a meltdown here… maybe that’s the plan… send out some ******** rumors so everyone is happy when they just run it back.

Another thought.

The fact that we are hearing Ingles, Bogey, and Royce on the table rather than Fav suggests to me that:

(1) the cost of giving up Fav is too much, so we’ve pivoted to moving a piece to get a pick rather than move one;
(2) we already have a deal in principle agreed to for Fav that involves us moving No. 30, and we are trying to trade back into the draft by moving someone else too.

Or nobody wants Faves which is a real possibility.

I think it’s #1 if anything. His name would be out there too if it was #2 imo.

Favs, Bogey, Joe, and Royce have all been mentioned as basically being available. Bogey and Joe a couple times. I kind of doubt they’ll trade Royce. Someone absent in all the rumors is clearly JC who they must not be shopping.

I completely agree with you on all of this. It's just that there's been a lot of smoke...Joes been mentioned twice now in national articles as being available, Deseret news writer Sarah Todd has mentioned both Joe and Favors as possible trade candidates in articles and radio interviews, even Locke has mentioned the possibility of trading him a few times and I can't ever remember him doing that in past off-seasons...he even spent a big chunk of one of his shows discussing possible players we could trade him for.

I really hope that they keep him but I can't remember his name ever being brought up in trade rumors in the past and now this off-season it's been brought up a ton. It just seems like there is too much smoke for there not to be some truth to it.

Just too much smoke surrounding Joe for it not to be true. This article has a paywall...Anyone able to read it and share what it says?

I think it's pretty clear two players are going to get traded this off-season. It's going to be Favors + one of non-Rudy/Mitchell players.

We keep hearing how Smith and the Jazz are all in to try and win a championship next year, and now they might trade Joe for a draft pick just to save money? Doesn't make much sense.
Even if they dump Joe they’re still in the tax. They’re probably trying to avoid the repeater tax next year, but there’s plenty of time to do that and if Mike is getting $20-25 million you’re still in it. If you can dump Joe and Favs you’re just under what it’s projected to be, but you still haven’t added a draft pick or filled out the roster. I really don’t know. From local reporting it sounds like Smith plans on having a big tax bill this year, and these are the sorts of things you’d see next offseason. From national reporting it seems like they’re just looking to trade.

Sometimes you gotta throw some chum in the water to see what’s biting.

The other thing — Zanik might be feeling the heat to be aggressive this offseason in an effort to not just be the interim guy.
This. This summer would probably be his only chance to leave a mark on the Jazz or on any NBA franchise. He's been the "second in charge" for so long and now it's basically a do-or-die moment to show what he's truly made of.

It's hard to reconcile everything that's being reported, but this is two reputable sources reporting on the same thing today. Take it for what it's worth.

Save money with the draft first then spend it on FA/offseason trade. Moving Bogey/Favs deal makes sense in that context. Not sure about Jingles though.

If we’re serious about contending, trading pieces to get prospects is a pretty bad look/move. Trade them for other pieces? Fine.

That said, I think each individual player’s odds of being traded is low. Any of Bojan, Joe, or Clarkson I’m just skeptical that we bring back enough value of what we need that it makes it a no-go. Guys like Favors may be a bit harder to move. I lean toward market forces keeping this roster in tact and forcing us to essentially do what was common sense for DL to do last year before he decided that it was “good enough.” That said, which was each individual player may have a small chance of being dealt, if you added up everyone’s odds of moving, perhaps maybe there’s an okay likelihood that someone could get moved.

If anyone wants to wade through the business jargon (@Handlogten's Heros ?) here's a new piece in the Harvard Business Review by Ryan Smith on "reinventing an already successful business." Maybe someone can glean some clues in regard to the Jazz.

Wonder if Smith's philosophy is that rough waters (trade rumors) are a useful way to keep players motivated? (I know this sounds negative; I mean the question neither negatively nor positively, as I think more than one philosophy can be successful.)
