Jazz select Grayson Allen at 21

Because it is only posters that think this may have been a bit of a reach... not other educated basketball experts. I'm fine with Allen, but the guys saying there is no way guys here could be more right than DM, DL, or QS is kind of dumb... many here thought Booker was better than Lyles... guess what?

We are allowed to disagree and stand on our own opinions... I'm just fighting back the notion that if a player is good then we should all be cool... you think DM knows who Okobo is? i mean he might but I doubt he has looked over the numbers and games some here have.

I think it is great to get input.. get all the data you can... but use it as one data point.
I never said people aren't entitled to their opinions, but I actually think it's kind of dumb to think that anyone on this board knows more about the prospects than DL and the Jazz coaching and scouting staffs. They attend countless games, watch thousands and thousands of hours of film, and interact directly with coaches and players. Most of the people on this board form their opinions from watching highlights before the draft. Of course DL knows Okobo. Doesn't mean they always get it right, but I think they are easily the most informed. They also have to commit to just ONE guy. It's a little easier to get it right when you get to choose 4 or 5 like most of us do.

PG_AB knows every 12 year old who plays basketball anywhere in the western hemisphere. Do the Jazz FO and scouts?

Didn't think so.

Any time your team drafts a guard or wing and you think he sucks, you always have hope that NBA spacing will be great for his game.

That's how I'm crying myself to sleep at night.

WTH happened to Cy? Haven’t seen him post in what seems like days
He trolled us all with wanting Allen that when it actually happened he had a mental collapse, realizing that his contrarian natural had finally come back on him and now he’s contemplating following LiAngelo on the Shanghai Sharks.

Now that was funny as hell, but seriously where is he?

KBD could have started. That’s an easy, cheap replacement of Favors. While we earned $500k selling the pick, we could have easily saved $8-12M by not needing to bring back Favors.
If it was only $500k (yes, ONLY $500k), every fan should have a bad taste in their mouth. Especially if that amount would've been enough to move up.

We have a good group of guys but I do wonder... what we’re rudy and DM supposed to say? We don’t like the pick we wanted the French kid. The ingles Rubio welcome exchange was pretty funny. I enjoy the guys running each other and how friendly and funny they are... I’ll bet our locker room is top 2-3 as far as fun, supportive teammates.
Top 2-3?

Number ****ing 1, I have no doubt!

I'll go on record saying I don't hate the pick. I'm guessing his greatest attribute will be his ability to learn the system and then maximize his role in it. As has been said many times already, he played with a great number of players at Duke and adjusted his game to accentuate theirs.

It also makes me wonder what happens with Exum. Does this signal they won't match any and all offers?

They were never matching any and all offers.

?

They were never matching any and all offers.

?

Technically correct. I should have said management has said they would love to keep him and will make every effort within reason to do so. I guess what I'm curious about is will it lower the offer they are willing to match.

With the 21st pick in the NBA draft teams normally get crap. One of the reasons i was excited this year was the depth. I truly believed and still do that this was a deep draft. I think the jazz took the safe pick when they should have gambled on potential. I think my frustration with the Allen pick is my belief that 3 players selected after Allen will eventually be much better than him.

So that i can be fairly judged in later years the 3 players i would have chosen before Allen are:
1. Elie Okobo (super high ceiling but he could also flop hard)
2. Anfernee Simons (same)
3. Chandler Hutchinson (shooter and athlete).

At 21 i would have risked the flop for a chance at greatness. I DONT think Allen is going to flop, but i just dont see the potential upside that I do with my choices.

I'm not disappointed with the Allen pick at 21, per se. If the Jazz didn't want to draft Okobo, or Hutchison, or Robert Williams, then they have their reasons. They obviously scouted the **** out of Allen, and they wanted to draft him at #21. They weren't interested in trading back and picking up an asset.

If I'm disappointed, it's that the Jazz weren't able to move up into the teens to get someone with more upside, like Lonnie Walker, Troy Brown or Josh Okogie. All three of those guys have more upside longer term than Allen and could be legitimate starters in the league.

Grayson Allen will be good at what he does. He'll be a reliable 3-pt shooter. He'll play his *** off on defense. He'll handle and run the plays that Quin wants to run without conflicting with Donovan Mitchell. He'll be a good rotation player, and may be a piece of the puzzle. If he gets hot shooting the ball during a playoff series, he could make a difference to winning the series.

DL says that Allen has been a complementary player supporting the star players at Duke, and that's the role he'll have here. He's obviously well coached and is as NBA ready as anyone we were looking at.

Prediction:

Grayson will break DMs record for 3s made by a rookie.

15/4/4 for the year on 54/41/85 shooting splits.

Will finish top 5 in rookie of the year votes.

Can we call him Man Hands?

Hmmm... how about Sloan Hands?
