What's new

Jazz select Isaiah Collier at pick 29

Im with locke. Collier jumps off the screen to me. I see the THT comp that Andy Larsen made, but there are levels to this. Isaiah Collier jumps off the screen

Watching his highlights I'm most impressed by his change of pace, he moves like he is on skates...looks like he can sprint half the court in about three strides. His passing also looks nice, sharp and imaginative.

Yeah feel like he’s on skates on the court to me too. Skates with great brakes too.

i watched colliers highligjts last night and i watched draft experts rip his shooting and defense. so i watched his shooting stroke carefully. his main problems are his feet. his right foot is too far forward so he is not square to the basket. the second issue is his feet are not shoulder width apart. it almost looks like hes taking a runner with every shot. the good news is that is fairly easy to correct. drop your right leg back so its just a little ahead of your left leg and keep your feet shoulder length apart. shoot 10k shots with the new form while in g league.

Jazz shooting coaches will fix that
Who are Jazz shooting coaches?

Just finished watching highlight videos and scouting reports how the F did he last to the 29th pick
We’re the only ones asking that question rn; after summer league everybody will be wondering the same. The spacing of the NBA game is so much better suited for the way he plays.

Not to mention, if you watch his highlights, at least half the threes he took were NBA range. He wasn’t taking easy threes. So while his 3pt % wasn’t great, he’s used to taking from that distance.

He’s as if DWill Tim Hardaway and Allen Iverson had a three way love child. In my eyes the three deadliest killer crossovers

I think his jumper looks broke. 34% isnt terrible tho. Would be awesome if he could get to 37%. Agree tho, a lot of his threes were top of the key.

I wasn’t too happy with the pick at the time of his selection, wasn’t upset I thought at least we got a high upside guy. But after further study I’m pretty excited about him and the fact we got him at 29

That’s true he was taking “Curry Range” shots for some weird reason.

Suspect shooting in what’s becoming a shooters League.
Yes but if you do a deep dive into the numbers he’s way better shooter than a bunch of guys that went into the lottery. He was a 34% shooter from 3 in college. Could he swing that up to 36-37% I don’t know but it’s very possible nice to finally have a young prospect where his natural position is PG. I think he just needs a few mechanical fixes and he’ll be fine.

On that not, I’ve heard he fell in the draft due to not shooting well which is super confusing because we saw guys like Castle, Holland, Buzelis, Salaun and others go much higher while not just being worse shooters, far and away worse shooters. It really isn’t close. So I don’t think you should be nitpicking at his shooting

I still can't believe this dude sat until 29. He's a pitbull. He played on a team where the only other player who was a solid, dependable volume scorer was Boogie Ellis (Kobe Johnson sucked). Give Collier some scorers and he's going to make them look good as well as score easy buckets himself.

Also, noone talks about his high basketball IQ. We have a dude who can run point, get assists and drive to the basket. And we have D-Wade there to give him advice - their games aren't identical but both love/loved to drive to the hoop and get contact.

This is my reaction to our front office drafting Collier at 29 after other teams passed on him:

I think Isaiah Collier has as much or more potential to score 20 pts as Rob Dillingham.

Okay, thanks.
I mean anyone can score 20 if they have enough shots. Collier is going to struggle to score his rookie year. I think it will take a couple years before he is a quality rotation player (outside of trying to lose).

He drives well but his style of bully ball might not translate given his lack of length and lack of ability to rise up in the paint

This is a great point. He never at any point was set up for success. He was up against it on a really bad team.

Minnesota is going sorely regret taking Dilly over Collier. The more I study the more dumbfounded I am he slipped that far.
