Jazz to actively pursue Paul Millsap this offseason, per Spencer Checketts

They are saying he'd be the starting small forward... I really don't like that

Yeah, that's what Checketts and Monson were saying. I don't like it either. Didn't we try that and it did not work well? If it does happen, I will trust DL and QS on it, but I have a hard time seeing it make sense. Seems to me we either need a real big as a backup or a real 3 and D wing. Sap is neither.

I view paul as a big wing, like boris diaw. Diaw is a bit more of a playmaker but you get the idea. San antonio rolls out kawhi, boris, green, manu, and belinelli at the wing at different times. I think paul could do it.

i was a little strong on the big wing comment. But he can play some wing. Nba is so positionless these days and i have faith in quin snyders game management. Maybe thats where the conversation needs to be. Do you believe quin snyder can deploy paul effectively at the wing at opportune times?

I'm a fan of Paul Millsap, but I don't really want him back. He's too old to be a long term piece for this developing team and he will cost too much money.

I'd gladly bring back DeMarre Carroll though. Junkyard Dog was Atlana's best defender, but could possibly be 4th best in Utah. . . think on that for a bit. He could come in and play SF or SG with Hayward and be Utah's perimeter "stopper" in the playoffs.

The defensive potential for a lineup of Gobert, Favors, Carroll, Hayward and Exum is intriguing, and his improvement as a scorer the past two seasons under Snyder and Budenholzer are impressive. He was the Hawks best player in the playoffs. I love Hood and Burks, but Carroll would be a better starter right now. Then bring Booker, Jingles, Hood and Burks (who we've slid into Trey Burke's current role behind Exum) off the bench. Draft or sign a backup center, and this team is in business.

You are aware that Carroll is only one year younger than Sap and will command about as much, right?

Maybe you are the master of sarcasm, but there is no way in hell a nearing 30 year old Millsap is an upgrade over Hayward at the 3 next season. I like Sap but Hayward was a better player 2 seasons ago.
Nope. Unless you're talking about as a perimeter player.

Is this happening before or after Whittingham leaves Utah to coach BYU? Because these are the same two idiots who were reporting that.

You think trading Favors for some dude named Kristaps is good idea for where this team is?
There was two parts to the idea.

It isn't simply trade favors for porzingas and go from there..... It's trade favors for porzingas AND pick up paul millsap.

The question becomes is favors > millsap and porzingas? Or, is favors/gobert > millsap/porz/Gobert?

I think it's interesting and should be considered

I'm aware of their respective ages and expected salaries. Paul is about a year and a half older, with a lot more wear and tear. It's my opinion that Carroll is a better fit at the 2/3 for the Jazz than Millsap would be at the 3/4. Purely subjective, but the Jazz need someone who can defend lights out offensive wings. Carroll brings that.

Carroll is expected to get around $50 million over 4 years. I'd jump on that deal.

If Russell is there at 4 and the Knicks were down to trade for Favors, I'd think long and hard about it. Especially if there's any creedence to Millsap returning.
Yup.

K, just checking. I agree about the fit thing, but I don't think age or even salary are as much a consideration. I'm the conductor of the Sign Carroll train.

But let's just say Millsap is down to re-sign provided he gets paid and starts. And let's say you can get Russell at 4 and the Knicks are down to trade that for Favors. And let's say Carroll is down to sign as well (which would be conceivable in this scenario since I believe the Knicks can absorb Favors' salary). Is Favors suddenly so irreplaceable?

A lot of caveats, I know. Anyway, w/e.
